UAE, Bahrain support Pompeo's list of demands for Iran

Hassan Rouhani and Mike Pompeo

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said the U.S. is imposing the "strongest sanctions in history" on Iran. Vowing to make them the strongest sanctions in history, he did not explain how US unilateral sanctions could be stronger than the multilateral sanctions that brought Iran to the table in the first place.

Also responding to Pompeo, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif accused the U.S. of a "regression to old habits", saying Washington's diplomatic efforts were a "sham".

China and India, as well as the European Union, have clearly indicated they had no intention of changing their buying habits regarding Iranian crude, with the European Union specifically signaling it would make an effort to uphold the Iran nuclear deal and shield companies doing business in the country from us sanctions.

"We will track down Iranian operatives and their Hizbollah proxies operating around the world and crush them", he said.

"Iranians shouldn't play into the challenges and USA radicalism", Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh told the Iranian Students News agency.

"Anytime sanctions are put in place, countries have to give up economic activity", Pompeo said, adding that US companies have sacrificed business opportunities. "These will indeed end up being the strongest sanctions in history when we are complete". The Europeans are searching for ways to protect their own companies from sanctions that Trump reimposed, though some big multinational firms already were avoiding business in Iran due to the uncertainty over the deal's fate.

All of that was worth it, Obama and Kerry insisted, because Iran had agreed to place temporary limits on its nuclear program that would expire over the next 10 to 20 years.

Asked how the USA will work with European nations to ease the impact of sanctions on their companies, Pompeo gave no ground. Iran is spreading aggressively throughout the Middle East.

He set out conditions for any new deal with Iran, including the withdrawal of its forces from Syria and an end to its support for rebels in Yemen.

"We are not asking anything other than that Iranian behavior be consistent with global norms", Pompeo said.

"The era of such statements has evolved and the Iranian people have heard these statements hundreds of times, and no longer pays attention", he added.

The new demands, laid out by secretary of state Mike Pompeo, marked a fundamental departure from the 2015 Join Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which the U.S. exited earlier this month.

"The US policy is correct".

It has spread its influence across parts of the Middle East where there are large communities of fellow Shia Muslims, from Iraq to Lebanon. "It aspires to achieve nuclear weapons by various means", Netanyahu said.

"We welcome any nation which is sick and exhausted of the nuclear threats, the terrorism, the missile proliferation and the brutality of a regime at peace with inflicting chaos on innocent people", he said.

"The Trump Administration has no desire to roll tanks in an effort to directly topple the Iranian regime", said the group's president, Jim Hanson. It just said quit doing as much as you were.

US President Donald Trump sparked an global outcry earlier this month when he announced his country would pull out of the landmark accord struck in July 2015 between Tehran and major world powers. To many companies, the prospect of losing all access to USA markets is a daunting one.

The EU has been trying to persuade Iran to stay in the 2015 agreement, even without Washington´s participation. The secretary said the administration ultimately wants a ratified treaty. The EU tried to dismiss Mr Pompeo's threat to Iran saying that it remained committed to the full implementation of the nuclear deal. "Every country's going to have to understand that we can not continue to create wealth for [Quds Force Commander] Qasem Soleimani", Pompeo said.
