Ahmed Musa fires warning to Lionel Messi and Argentina

Cesc Fabregas Lionel Messi

The 2014 World Cup final in Brazil was supposed to be Lionel Messi's crowning moment, the chance for him to take his place alongside Diego Maradona in Argentina's pantheon of heroes.

It had been suggested that 1986 World Cup victor Jorge Burruchaga, the team's technical director, would replace Sampaoli, but the claims were strongly denied by the Argentina Football Association (AFA) on Saturday. The Russia forward scored his third goal of the tournament in a 3-1 win against Egypt Tuesday at Saint Petersburg Stadium. So here (at Argentina), they expect he needs to score three goals every single game like he does for Barcelona.

Argentina plays their last game of the World Cup group stage against Nigeria on June 26th.

Writing in a column for BBC Sport, Fabregas, who was left out of Spain's squad for this summer's tournament, said that Ronaldo's four goals in two games, including a hat trick against La Roja, "have come from set-pieces, penalties or mistakes".

Whereas Ronaldo netted a hat-trick in Portugal's 3-3 draw with Spain before scoring their victor against Morocco, Messi has floundered in front of goal - missing a penalty against Iceland before putting in an underwhelming display in Nizhny Novgorod.

According to 1986 World Cup victor, Ricardo Giusti, Burruchaga has confirmed that the coach has been stripped of his effective power ahead of the Nigeria game.Giusti said: "The players will decide the team, that's a fact".

"You remember so many Argentina teams with great players in the past, but this team is so far from those".

His first goal against Iceland earned comparisons with Dennis Bergkamp's injury-time wonder goal for the Netherlands that knocked Argentina out of the 1998 World Cup quarter-finals. He should have started against Iceland, the weaker team, in the way he played against Croatia because they are a much weaker team and the other way round - the way he played against Iceland was how he should have played against Croatia.

"We know if we do things right, we all will benefit from it, and if things go worse, we all will suffer for it".

But Argentina is still a slight favorite to advance as the runner-up in Group D after Nigeria beat Iceland on Friday.

'Possibly, I'm going to score another two goals'.
