Best for Britain campaign aims second Brexit referendum

BRITAIN-EU-POLITICS-LABOUR-BREXIT-PROTEST

Companies face an extra 20 billion pounds ($27 billion) a year in costs to comply with the customs arrangement if there is a no-deal Brexit, Britain's most senior tax official said on Tuesday.

"It would be the Hotel California scenario - we'd have checked out but we wouldn't have left". If the United Kingdom and the EU can not agree on those "specific solutions", then either the United Kingdom as a whole, or Northern Ireland, will remain aligned to the single market and the customs union after Brexit takes place.

"You know people want us to get on with it and that's exactly what we're doing", the PM said. "Over the past year, we have continued to push the Government on what needs to be agreed to "Keep Britain Trading" after Brexit". 45% of those polled in the province said they wanted to remain in the UK. "What is feasible for a territory the size of Northern Ireland is not necessarily feasible for the whole United Kingdom".

Mrs May also held separate face-to-face meetings in her parliamentary office with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox.

In his subsequent tweet, the European Union negotiator appeared to concede that Mrs May's proposal did not amount to a simple extension of the Commission scheme to cover the whole UK.

DUP leader Arlene Foster says Barnier does not understand the wider unionist culture of Northern Ireland.

The British government is proposing a "temporary" customs arrangement that will delay the prospect of a hard border in Northern Ireland.

May refused to give a "cast-iron guarantee" that the cut-off date for the backstop plan would not extend beyond December 2021, but said that the government expects to have a better customs arrangement in place by then "at the very latest".

Her spokesman repeated her determination to avoid a customs border inside the United Kingdom after Barnier made clear the European Union views that as a possibility.

In a morning of speculation at Westminster, Mr Davis's chances of resigning - and delivering a damaging departure from Mrs May's cabinet - had earlier been judged at "50-50" by a source close to the Brexit secretary.

But Mr Barnier said the proposal raised a number of relevant and hard issues.

Asked for his reaction, Barnier said that he wonders if Britain "sometimes feels a certain nostalgia about leaving the European Union because it seems to want to remain inside practically everywhere without ever respecting the regulatory framework".

The move was heralded by some as a significant shift by the Labour leadership towards a softer Brexit position, though several pro-EU Labour MPs said it would throw away the potential to defeat the government on the EEA amendment.

The event today kicks off a summer of campaigning by the group in 70 key seats throughout the country to try and swing the Brexit debate.

"Details of whether or not the country will have a Transition/Implementation Period are still unclear, there is still no decision on what customs arrangements we will have from March 2019 onwards".
