Duterte kiss during South Korea visit draws disgust

Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte sparks outrage by kissing woman on stage in South Korea

Speaking to CNN Philippines Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, who is part of the country's delegation to South Korea, said, "There were at least four agreements signed, but the cumulative total of investments to be brought home is 4.9 billion (pesos) and overseas development assistance is one billion doubled, which will go and assist the country in infrastructure such as roads and bridges".

"President Duterte acted like a feudal king who thinks that being the President is an entitlement to do anything that he pleases", said Senator Risa Hontiveros, who asked the public not to pass judgement on the woman.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte drew condemnation Monday kissed a Filipina during his visit to South Korea and touched off a furore.

Making the rounds also on social media was a spoof photo of the same kiss, but with the woman replaced by superimposed image of China's President Xi Jinping, in an attempt to poke fun at Duterte's high regard for his Chinese counterpart.

The left-wing Gabriela women's party condemned Duterte's act, which it said underscored his "machismo and misogyny". The footage didn't actually show the kiss, as the camera moved away from the stage just as the president approached the woman, and focused on the audience's reaction-mostly smiles and cheers. "A crowd of more than 2,000 Filipinos are expected to meet and greet the President".

In a statement, the women's rights group Gabriela called it "disgusting theatrics" by a "misogynist president".

During the event, two women were called onto the stage to receive a book from 73-year-old Duterte.

It is not the first time Mr Duterte has been accused of inappropriate behaviour towards women. Duterte later apologized for the comments, then retracted his apology.

You in white, are you ready to engage in kissing?

She said that there was "no malice" in the kiss, adding that the incident didn't "mean anything except to entertain and make other Filipinos in the gathering happy".

Online, both critics and supporters of the president weighed in.

State-run Philippine News Agency identified the woman as Bea Kim and posted a brief video interview with her on its Facebook page.

"There wasn't malice in it", she said. "But she was so attractive, the mayor should have been first, what a waste".

Earlier this year Mr Duterte told Filipino soldiers they should shoot female communist rebels in the vagina.
