Germany's Merkel seeks European solution to migrant dispute

German Chancellor Angela Merkel attends a news conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg after a meeting at the chancellery in Berlin Friday

The ultra-conservative minister's "migration master plan", which included various controversial measures, has led to a crisis within the ruling coalition government.

It seems to have dawned on Seehofer that if Germany sends back refugees who are registered elsewhere, a country such as Italy with its new anti-immigrant government might stop registering them, as it did at the height of the refugee crisis in 2015.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer is calling for Germany to turn back at its border migrants previously registered as asylum-seekers in other European countries.

German Interior Minister and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) Party Horst Seehofer arrives for a press conference after the party meeting at the CSU headquarters in Munich on June 18 2018. While the CSU is widely expected to win that vote, it faces a strong challenge from the far-right Alternative for Germany party, or AfD.

Earlier, Bild newspaper, citing unnamed sources from the CSU leadership, reported that the CSU would give Merkel two weeks, until an EU summit on June 28-29, to deliver a European solution on migrant policy before defying her by implementing his plan.

Merkel and Macron jointly stressed the need for an EU-wide solution to the migration crisis that is now casting a shadow over cooperation between European neighbors, according to German news agency dpa.

We don't want what is happening with immigration in Europe to happen with us!

Several high profile crimes by migrants - including the 2016 Christmas market attack by a failed Tunisian asylum seeker as well as the recent rape-murder of a teenage girl allegedly by an Iraqi - have also helped to fuel anger.

"Such platforms should provide for rapid processing to distinguish between economic migrants and those in need of worldwide protection, and reduce the incentive to embark on perilous journeys", the draft statement of European Union leaders said.

A surge in asylum seekers crossing European Union borders since 2015 dramatically exposed the inadequacy of the bloc's asylum rules and practices, feeding support for populist movements that have helped bring about regime changes in states including Austria and most recently Italy.

There is even talk that the 70-year-old conservative parliamentary alliance between the CDU and CSU could collapse.

On Monday, reports emerged that Seehofer has agreed to give Merkel two weeks to come up with a solution, but the situation is still highly concerning for investors already anxious about politics in the European region.

The German government said no special EU summit is planned, and that would be a matter for EU leaders in Brussels, but "of course the German government is holding talks with various member states and the (EU) Commission" about immigration in Europe.

"I'm not aware of the report that you're referencing, but I'd be happy to check into it and circle back with you", she said.

Millions of refugees have traversed the Mediterranean Sea in the last few years to apply for asylum in the EU.
