Ghana to dissolve football association over bribery allegations

Martin Amidu with President Akufo-Addo

What began on Thursday morning as protection from a possible violent reaction from the public to an investigative documentary on corruption in football has turned into a take over as over 30 armed police officers both plainclothed and uniformed invaded the GFA premises in Accra around 5pm on Friday.

The Ghanaian government has chose to dissolve the country's football association after claims, in an undercover documentary, of bribe-taking by referees and kickbacks to top officials.

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi was seen receiving a $65,000 cash gift from undercover journalists with the belief that they were meeting to discuss a sponsorship deal.

After watching parts of the documentary last month, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo asked police to investigate Nyantakyi, and the soccer official was arrested.

The FA has been caught up in a mess as the video - produced by renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye Private Investigations outfit - exposed corruption and match-fixing activities of top officials and referees. Mr. Nyantakyi himself resigned hours after he was banned by FIFA and a day after government expressed intention to dissolve the association he heads.

I wish to state my interest was to develop Ghana Football which led me to take the supposed investors to the President of the Ghana Football Association.

Ghana's information minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said the government would dissolve the GFA because of the "widespread nature of the apparent rot".

Federation Internationale de Football Association has not yet commented on whether any action will be taken over the government's plan to dissolve the GFA.

The statement added that the government will announce provisional measures to govern football until a new body is formed, and that it would inform FIFA and the Confederation of African Football of its decision.

Football is by far the most popular sport in Ghana and while the national team, the Black Stars, failed to reach this year's World Cup finals, they were quarter-finalists in South Africa in 2010.
