How to have tough conversations about mental health

Andrew Cuomo

A recent study shows a dramatic jump in suicides over the past several years.

A total of 25 states had suicide rate increases of more than 30 percent in that span. However, "the reason most suicide decedents don't have a known mental disorder is that they were never diagnosed, not that they didn't have one", said Dr David Brent, a psychiatrist at the University of Pittsburgh, told the New York Times.

Reidenberg understands the complexities of suicides, pointing out there are nearly always multiple causes, including mental illnesses, substance abuse, a life change such as a job loss or a break up.

In 2016, the population group at the highest risk for suicide was 45 to 54, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A day after the report was published, celebrity chef and writer Anthony Bourdain also died by an apparent suicide.

Suicide is now the tenth leading cause of death in the United States.

On Thursday, the CDC announced suicide rates in most states, including MI, have gone up 30 percent since 1999.

As admirers of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade ask why following a hard week, a new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows that suicide rates in 49 out of 50 states are on the rise. "If we can help one out of ten people, that makes a big difference".

Family members or friends concerned about someone who is struggling can ask directly about suicide and remove firearms or any other means the person is considering from the home, said Jennifer Stuber, director of Forefront Suicide Prevention at the University of Washington in Seattle.

"The important thing is to talk about it", Henderson said.

Henderson says decreasing these numbers will start by talking about mental health the same way we talk about physical health. Among people aged 15 to 34, suicide is the second leading cause of death.

"A celebrity's suicide can create a contagion that we want to be aware of and those individuals who are a risk, who might be connected to that celebrity, we want to reach out to them", Egan said.

"It has to be consistent over the years to get more and more people involved", Egan said.

The CDC urges potential suicides to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.
