Senegal's controversial victor 'kind of curious' - Poland coach Adam Nawalka

World Cup 2018, Poland vs Senegal: Preview, Team News, Prediction, Head-to-Head & Key Stats

Senegal recorded the first African win at the 2018 World Cup when they beat Poland 2-1 on Tuesday thanks to a deflected Thiago Cionek own goal and a bad error by Polish 'keeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Szczesney came rushing out to collect a wayward back-pass but completely mistimed his run and failed to clear the ball, allowing Niang to tap into an open goal for Senegal's all-important second goal.

The Poles finally got their reward four minutes from time as Krychowiak steered a fine header across N'Diaye into the far corner of the net from a free-kick, but it was too little too late.

FC's Janusz Michallik says Poland only have themselves to blame for their mistakes in a 2-1 defeat to Senegal.

It was the 29-year-old Bayern Munich striker's World Cup debut and he needs much better service if he is to help Poland recover from their bad start and progress beyond the group stage.

When is FIFA World Cup 2018 Poland vs Senegal match?

"The second goal was curious", said Nawalka. It's a speedy, confident side and they proved on Tuesday that it can make even more noise in this tourney. Poland must get more out of their main man against Colombia on Sunday. They are a strong team that feature an excellent spine of players and could do the same again.

Senegal doubled the lead when M'Baye Niang took advantage of a mix-up between Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczesny to finish easily as Niang returned to the pitch from an injury.

An own goal by Thiago Cionek late in the first half preceded the appalling defensive mix-up that let Niang score into an empty net on the hour.

Senegal are the only one of the five African sides in the competition to avoid defeat in their opening game.

Senegal, with 10 European players in their starting line-up, played like a European side, with a well-drilled backline led superbly by Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly who largely subdued Poland's record scorer Robert Lewandowski.

Senegal midfielder Mbaye Niang saw the signal from the referee to re-enter following treatment for an injury and jogged along the center line.

It would have gone wide if Cionek had not made a decision to wrong-foot former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and plant it in the bottom corner of his net.

Senegal will take on Colombia next but those obsessed with cleanliness probably can't wait until their final group game against Japan where both teams will be looking to out polite each other in the stands.

On Wednesday, Morocco too will be facing Portugal in a Group B match at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow needing a win to stay on.
