Smoking dips, awareness yet to rise: World Health Organization study

Although there is no single intervention that can reduce the risks to heart health by tobacco use, Jamaica continues to implement measures in keeping with best practice and treaty obligations: protection from tobacco smoke with the promulgation of the Public Health (Tobacco Control) Regulations 2013 and its 2014 amendments.

Around 40,000 people die of smoking-related diseases in the country every year, and numerous diseases like cancers, cardiovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are leading death causes in Vietnam, he noted.

Arsen Torosyan noted the cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, adding some 12% of heart diseases develop due to smoking or exposure to the second-hand smoke.

It also aims to provide opportunities for the public, governments and others to make commitments to promote heart health by protecting people from use of tobacco products.

Tobacco kills over 7 million people each year, despite the steady reduction in tobacco use globally.

Tobacco use has declined markedly since 2000, according to a new World Health Organization report, but the reduction is insufficient to meet globally agreed targets aimed at protecting people from death and suffering from cardiovascular and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

"The data show what we have anecdotally known for decades- that many smokers have the desire to quit, but not the means to match it", said Derek Yach, President of Foundation for a Smoke-Free World.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2018 is "Tobacco and heart disease".

On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on Thursday, Douglas Bettcher, Director of WHO's Department for the Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases, warned there is still a lack of awareness of the risks of the harmful habit.

A study past year found that despite decades of tobacco control policies, population growth had meant there was an increased number of smokers.

WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan says tobacco threatens the world.

Around 6.5% of the global population aged 15 and over use smokeless tobacco, (8.4% of males and 4.6% of females). "Let us choose health, not tobacco", he said. The theme of the May 31 observance is, "Tobacco Breaks Hearts". Most of the cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer types, including some 80-85% of lung cancer are caused by long-term smoking.

There are several factors that have led to the decrease in the number of cigarette smokers.

Many of us are now trying to quit smoking with the help of e-cigarettes, but by using the devices we may be exposing ourselves to a new health risk.

"Talking to your doctor can increase the chances of someone quitting smoking", says Dr. Rizzo.

The good news is that from the moment a smoker quits smoking, his body begins to feel the benefits, she said.

Smoking also unleashes poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, which replaces oxygen in the blood - reducing the availability of oxygen for the heart. Eighty percent of these deaths occur in low to middle-income countries.
