The US Supreme supports Trump's immigration veto

Supreme Court Upholds Donald Trump’s Travel Ban 3.0, Says POTUS ‘Possesses An Extraordinary Power’

The ruling, denounced by civil rights groups and Democrats as well as protesters outside the courthouse, empowers Trump as he is embroiled in controversy over his approach toward illegal immigration along the U.S.

Protesters took to the streets from Washington to Los Angeles and NY to bemoan the decision, and oppose the administration's hardline approach on the southern border, where 2 000 children remain separated from their migrant parents.

The US Supreme Court today (June 26) decided Trump v. Hawaii (pdf), finding that Donald Trump's "travel ban" on citizens from six predominantly Muslim nations and Venezuela has a "rational basis" in "legitimate state interests".

"As a community, we must have our voices be heard, and the only way to do that is to make sure that we are registered to vote, and that we vote", Sheiah said.

Bill O'Keefe, Catholic Relief Services' vice president for government relations, said in a statement that numerous people seeking refuge in the USA are victims of the same terrorists Americans are trying to fight, and denying them entry won't make the nation safer.

Immigration has been one of the thorniest issues in American politics for decades and the Trump administration has rolled back its "zero tolerance" border policy that had triggered worldwide outcries over family separations. The views expressed therein are not necessarily those of stlucianewsonline.com, its sponsors or advertisers.

It's not clear how or if the travel ban will affect the Conrad 30 J-1 visa waiver, which allows global medical students to stay in the United States after residency for three years if they work in a rural or urban community where there is a physician shortage.

The ruling came on an issue that has been central for Trump, from his campaign outbursts against "radical Islamic terrorism" through his presidency.

Challengers, led by the state of Hawaii, argued that the order was both illegal and unconstitutional.

"It leaves undisturbed a policy first advertised openly and unequivocally as a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States" because the policy now masquerades behind a facade of national-security concerns", Sotomayor wrote.

President Donald Trump is hailing the Supreme Court's ruling upholding his administration's travel ban as "a moment of profound vindication". Many held banners reading: "No ban No wall No raids NY is for all".

But it became clear the Supreme Court was prepared to rule for the administration. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in a dissenting opinion, said the First Amendment clearly says the government can not favor one religion over another. "Based on the evidence in the record, a reasonable observer would conclude that the Proclamation was motivated by anti-Muslim animus", Sotomayor said. Roberts said it was "wholly inapt to liken that morally repugnant order to a facial neutral policy denying certain foreign nationals the privilege of admission". The President's ban on travel from several Muslim-majority countries is another brick in the invisible wall which does nothing to strengthen our national security, or our nation's shared prosperity.

The current state of the travel ban is described in full below. It also applies to North Korea and Venezuela, but those provisions were not challenged in court. "I think he may feel emboldened to continue to restrict immigration in a variety of ways because he believes that even if challenged in court, he may well win".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the Supreme Court's travel ban ruling a "great victory" for Americans' safety.

This is the third version of the travel ban, issued in September after previous bans bounced around through the courts.

Mr Trump also has moved to rescind protections for young immigrants, sometimes called Dreamers, brought into the United States illegally as children, intensified deportation efforts and pursued limits on legal immigration. A telling statistic, it shows that many would rather a court stop this from continuing. In 2014, she received asylum and her sons were approved to join her in the U.S. But after the U.S. embassy in Yemen was closed in 2015, their processing was delayed.
