Trump backs out of G-7 communique, criticises Canadian PM Trudeau

Talks with Trump are like sausages, says French President Macron: Report

Not to be outdone, Trump responded on Twitter saying that both Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "are charging the USA massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

Following an exchange of terse messages before the summit, the two leaders struck a conciliatory tone with Trump saying that the relationship was special, but that sometimes tests occur when it comes to trade.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday (10 June) she was more open to French President Emmanuel Macron's plans to reform migration and defence policy in Europe than his hopes to bolster the euro.

The chancellor also announced during Sunday's interview that, just like Canada, the European Union was also preparing counter-measures to Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs. "The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be", Macron wrote. "We also had a very positive meeting a little while ago on NAFTA - so this is turning out to be an interesting day".

Merkel's comments came amid the escalating fallout from a contentious meeting between Trump and other world leaders at the recently concluded Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Canada.

The G7 nations are Canada, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan and Italy.

Other world leaders shared different angles of the photograph.

"The common European position is against the return of Russian Federation", one senior aide to Macron told reporters, although the leaders did leave open "the possibility of establishing dialogue" with Moscow.

"We are very clear that Canada does not pose a national security threat to the United States", Freeland said. The consensus documents typically outline a shared vision of global affairs, where the seven countries also undertake commitments on everything from currencies, development aid and worldwide security.

The photo was also posted on Twitter by Trump's national security adviser John Bolton, who stated that the U.S. president's posture sent a message to other G7 countries that the United States will no longer be their bank.

Peter Navarro tells "Fox News Sunday" that's what Trudeau did to Trump at the end of the Group of Seven nations meeting in Canada over the weekend.

Mr Trump will skip G7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection. "Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't".

The bid to gloss over the divide might see the reputation of the G-7 salvaged instead of becoming an unprecedented casualty of USA tariffs, disagreements over climate change and the future of the Iran deal.

Like Canada, the European Union is preparing counter-measures against US tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, in line with World Trade Organisation rules, Merkel said. Describing the tense three days, Bruno Le Maire, France's finance and economy minister, said it was "far more a G-6 plus one than a G-7".
