Trump Commutes Sentence Of Woman Serving Life For Non-Violent Drug Offense

President Donald Trump met with Kim Kardashian West last month at the White House

The two met last Wednesday, alongside Jared Kushner, and discussed whether Ms. Johnson should be released and if she has paid her debt to society.

Kardashian West joined what has been a long-running campaign for Johnson's freedom, spearheaded by the clemency foundation CAN-DO, friends and family.

The decision to commute Johnson's sentence was advocated by Kushner and Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka. Her involvement with cocaine dealers reportedly came about after she lost her job, her son was killed, she got divorced and her home was foreclosed on.

Johnson's case caught nationwide attention after the reality-television star Kim Kardashian West took notice of her case a year ago and retained an attorney to help her clemency bid.

In another tweet, she said she was grateful to President Trump and the others involved in Johnson's commutation.

Following the commutation, Johnson told MSNBC that this clemency is "saving her life".

"This country's addiction to mass incarceration has devastated millions of families like Alice's, with emotional and economic consequences that can last generations", she added.

"I'm just so thankful".

Trump is moving more quickly to exercise his pardon power than recent presidents.

Citing Johnson's good behavior and rehabilitation, President Trump on Wednesday commuted her sentence a week after meeting with Kardashian.

Attorney Brittany K. Barnett, another member of Johnson's legal team, thanked Trump in a statement that said, "Life in prison without the possibility of parole screams that a person is beyond hope, beyond redemption. Since being incarcerated she has been a model prisoner who mentors women and has become an ordained minister", she wrote.

Alice Marie Johnson was serving a life sentence for a non violent drug offence in 1996.

During the interview, the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star admitted that being in the White House was downright awe-inspiring. Johnson said she wanted to thank the president for giving her "another chance" at life. "I was going to rejoin my family". This just isn't fair.' He knew that this is the right thing to do, and he said that from the start after he had heard her whole story and situation and he knew it was the right thing to do.
