Trump delivers warning on trade as he leaves G-7 summit

Trump disrupts G-7 gender equality meeting by arriving late

Moscow has denied the allegations.

Trump, who railed against globalization in his election campaign, said he wanted all G7 nations to remove any tariffs, subsidies and other trade barriers.

But he said so many "are unbelievable dishonest".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday the two leaders discussed the prospects for their meeting in a March phone call, and talked about locations with Vienna as a possibility.

"I figured", he said dismissively, when the questioner identified himself as representing CNN.

"We have a great relationship".

But even before the G7 summit began, the USA and other participants were on a collision course on a number of issues.

"But you have to ask that question to President Obama", Trump said.

However, Peskov also stressed that no specific agreement had been reached about holding a summit between Trump and Putin. Canada has been adamant it won't agree to such a clause. "In fact, I congratulate the leaders of other countries for so crazily being able to make these trade deals that were so good for their countries and so bad for the United States".

G8 became G7 in 2014 when Russian Federation was excluded over the unlawful annexation of Crimea.

"We are looking for peace in the world, we are not looking to play games".

She said: "Where we disagree with our allies on something it is right that we say so, and air the issue openly and frankly".

Putin said in a Russian television interview that a meeting with Trump would be "useful".

He also defended the wisdom of his controversial tariffs, saying that the USA would win a trade war against its allies because "they do so much more business with us than we do with them".

Trump said: "If they retaliate they are making a mistake".

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with USA trading partners furious over Mr. Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda. He says: "That's the way it should be".

"They understand that. They know it". Our farmers, whether it's through a non-tariff trade barrier or whether it's through very high tariffs. this is all over the world.

Mrs May has acted as something of a mediator in heated talks at the global summit in Quebec, pleading with fellow leaders to step back from the brink of a trade war at a session on Friday night.

The president has angered Canada, Mexico and European countries with his recent decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

As he headed to the summit of G7 nations - the United States, Canada, Japan, Britain, Italy, Germany and France - the USA president said: "Russia should be in the meeting".

"Were like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing", Trump said.

Trump had grumbled to aides ahead of the meeting that he didnt want to go sit through lectures from the other leaders, and he mused about sending Vice President Mike Pence in his place.

Putin indicated that he did not like "a lot" of the United States authorities' decisions but praised Trump for his consistency.

Trump will be leaving the summit four hours earlier to travel to Singapore to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Summit host Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sided with his European and Japanese colleagues against the unpredictable USA leader and his "illegal" levies on steel and aluminum imports.

On Saturday, Trump repeated his desire to have a sunset clause in an updated NAFTA deal, a demand that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rejected.

Trudeau has made the issue of gender equality a priority for the gathering.

Trump was seated between Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, and Christine Whitecross, a Canadian lieutenant general.

US President Donald Trump has planned to leave the summit of the Group of Seven wealthy nations before it discusses climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by US trade tariffs. Then he tried to ease tension with friendly banter and vague claims of progress in trade talks.

Macron said he and Trump held "open and direct" discussions, adding that he thought there was a way to get a "win-win" outcome on trade, though details remained unclear.

Meanwhile, the European Union - the world's largest trading bloc - announced last week it would impose retaliatory tariffs on the USA beginning in July, over Washington's duties on steel and aluminum imports from Europe.

Trump contends that other countries "have been taking advantage of the United States on trade".
