Trump Keeps Lying About His Administration's Family Separation Strategy

White House aide Kellyanne Conway 'Nobody likes' policy of separating immigrant kids from their parents

The nation's homeland security chief insisted Sunday that immigrant children are not being separated from their parents at the border - despite the Trump administration defending its policy and eyewitness accounts of government-snatched boys and girls being held in cages at a private detention center in Texas.

The White House delayed the briefing three times to allow for Nielsen, who attended the National Sheriffs' Association meeting in New Orleans this morning, to answer questions.

On Friday, Mr Trump hinted in a tweet that the policy was intended as political leverage to force Democratic lawmakers to agree to changes to immigration law containing elements they opposed, including the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.

"No more free passes, no more get out of jail free cards", she said.

"We have a statutory responsibility that we take seriously to protect alien children", she said.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Monday afternoon with two Republican senators who have the hard task this week of balancing the president's requests for funding for more immigration enforcement and a border wall with the realities of needing Democratic support to pass spending bills.

She claimed "misinformation" was being spread about the policy, which is that all people caught crossing the border illegally are prosecuted and thus families are separated. "For those seeking asylum at ports of entry, we have continued the policy from previous administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between "family" members, or if the adult has broken a law". CNN is looking into reports that these individuals are being turned away there, as well. "But we do have a policy of prosecuting adults who flout our laws to come here illegally instead of waiting their turn or claiming asylum at any port of entry".

Is this the best way to handle families entering the US illegally, seeking asylum?

The Trump administration's zero-tolerance policy at the border has been the focus of several dispatches from Border Patrol facilities in Texas where hundreds of migrants-many of them children-are being kept in a "series of cages created by metal fencing". At one point, NY magazine's Olivia Nuzzi played audio, published by ProPublica earlier, that recorded border patrol agents mocking weeping child migrants separated by their parents.

That's from WaPo, which reported in the same piece that Trump is known to tell aides that Nielsen's "not tough enough" and that she's a "Bush person". "It's a simple choice", she said.

Trump administration officials say the policy is meant to deter undocumented immigrants from making the trek to the USA border with their children.

Nielsen is the latest administration official to be called out for misleading statements on the policy.
