Trump reverses family separation policy after tech, political backlash

Breaking: Trump announces he will sign an executive action to end family separation

"What we have done today is we are keeping families together", Trump said as he signed the executive order. But, at least for the next few weeks, it would keep families together while they are in custody, expedite their cases and ask the Defense Department to help house them. The actions left parents with little or no information about where their children were being taken or when or how they would be reunited. "We are going to have very strong borders, but we're going to keep the families together", he said. That's just what he did. "And border security will be equal, if not greater than previously".

Democrats and immigrant rights advocates have also called for families arrested at the border to be monitored using alternatives to detention that allow them to live outside government facilities while they undergo immigration proceedings.

"We're not there yet but we're working on it", she said. It's unclear what happens if no changes to law or the settlement take place by the time families reach the detainment deadline. But cases where there is a concern that parents "would pose a risk to the child's welfare" have been exempted from the executive order.

And it didn't do much for the teeming outrage over the issue.

The president signed an executive order temporarily ending the separation of children from their parents who cross the border illegally.

Photos of detention facilities holding migrant children under the Obama and Trump administrations bear striking similarities.

It was not clear how or if the policy would affect children already separated from their families.

According to another lawsuit, migrant children say they were forcibly administered drugs at the Shiloh Treatment Center near Houston, Texas.

But the volume of condemnation on breaking up families, from inside and outside the White House, finally overwhelmed Trump.

Top Democratic leader Congressman Joe Crowley said while this order stops the separation of children from their parents, it does not end the administration's despicable policy of unreasonably detaining asylum seekers and families fleeing violence.

"What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms)", Trump tweeted.

Planning at the Justice Department had been underway over the past several days to provide the president with options on the growing crisis, said the official, who, like others, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the effort before its official announcement. She was heckled at a restaurant Tuesday evening and has faced protesters at her home.

"You need some deterrent so they don't think that anyone who wants to come across the border, as long as they have children, can do so. Republicans want security. But I am working on something - it never ends!"

On Wednesday, Mr Trump made a U-turn and took executive action aimed at curbing the separation of families. It was only in April when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a zero-tolerance policy for all undocumented border crossings that the numbers of separated families ballooned.

Homeland Security officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The more conservative bill would deny the chance of future citizenship to "Dreamers" - immigrants brought illegally into the United States years ago when they were children.

But under USA law, migrant children can not be detained more than 20 days by immigration officials.

Ken Wolfe was speaking for the Administration of Children and Families (ACF), which oversees where children are placed after they are separated from their parents.

The president warned there are criminals who use children as tickets to enter the U.S.

The House bills would undo a federal court agreement that limits the time that minors here illegally can be held in custody to 20 days, which would allow them to be with their parents in a detention facility indefinitely.
