United Nations warns that US strengthens abusive regimes with UNHRC withdrawal

Russia calls out US ‘cynicism’ for rights council pullout

"The Human Rights Council without the U.S. will be weaker, but endeavors of the United States in protecting and promoting human rights throughout the world will be weaker as well", Pahor said.

China, which has on multiple occasions voiced support for multilateral institutions abandoned by U.S. President Donald Trump, portrayed the council as "a major body.to promote the realisation of human rights".

The council's goal is to globally protect human rights.

China has weighed in on the U.S.'s recently announced decision to withdraw from the United Nations Human Rights Council, Reuters reported.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley confirmed the nation's exit during a joint appearance at the State Department. We make our share of mistakes, and we correct them. Haley says that was "a contributing factor" in the USA decision to leave the council. It added that the USA criticism of the council for failing to make changes advocated by Washington appears "cynical".

The move could reinforce the perception that the Trump administration is seeking to advance Israel's agenda on the world stage, just as it prepares to unveil its long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan despite Palestinian outrage over the embassy relocation.

"Clearly, it's the right decision to get off", Mr. Bolton said during an interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends".

New Zealand, which stepped aside to allow the United States to win election to the Council in 2009 under President Barack Obama, may be a good choice as a replacement, two diplomats said.

Among reforms the USA had pushed for was to make it easier to kick out member states with egregious rights records.

The United States' current term on the council ends next year. "Should it become reformed, we would be happy to rejoin it", Haley said.

The Geneva-based body was established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide, but its pronouncements and reports have often infuriated the U.S. - in particular, the council's relentless focus on Israeli policies toward the Palestinians.

And the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank close to the Trump administration, defended the move, calling the council "notably incurious about the human rights situations in some of the world's most oppressive countries".

Haley says the organizations wrote a joint letter to members of the Human Rights Council urging them to oppose a US -sponsored resolution to reform it. The official wasn't authorized to comment publicly and insisted on anonymity. "The only thing worse than a council that does nearly nothing to protect human rights is a council that covers for human rights abuses and is therefore an obstacle to progress and an impediment to change".

That means the council will be left without one of its traditional defenders of human rights.

The U.S.is the first country to exit voluntarily in the council's 12-year history.

The Human Rights Council is a 47-country body that draws its mandate from the U.N. General Assembly, and meets three times a year in Geneva.

Russia's foreign ministry had earlier accused the US of "gross cynicism" and "disregard" for the United Nations.
