US net neutrality rules expire, court battle looms

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House

The Federal Communications Commission has officially lifted Obama-era internet protections known as net neutrality, leading to a potential change in how fast apps, websites and online services load depending on internet service providers (ISP.) The change comes six months after the FCC voted to undo the rules.

"Consumers won't notice the shift at first, but over time the internet will become unrecognizable", she said.

Enacted in 2015, the rules sought to stop providers giving preferential treatment to sites and services that paid them to accelerate their data. "They are not concerned that Internet service providers are going to block access to lawful content".

The Republican-majority FCC voted along party lines in December to repeal the regulations, which expired today. To commemorate the occasion, FCC chairman Ajit Pai - the man mainly responsible for the repeal of Net Neutrality - penned an op-ed piece for CNET in which he champions the dissolution of internet regulations. It's not hyperbole to say that the repeal of these rules may just be the least popular tech policy decision in government history.

If the resolution gets a vote in the House, it may not succeed. Some states are moving to restore net neutrality, and lawsuits are pending. The longer-term ramifications of a world without net neutrality is what concerns proponents of a fair and open internet - issues like a threat to free flow of information and a hazard to speech rights.

How could the net neutrality repeal affect you?

He added that the Federal Trade Commission will work to protect consumers. Some states, like New Jersey, Washington, and California, have been actively working on state laws that would keep net neutrality alive within their jurisdictions.

And critics fear repealing them may see consumers charged extra for anything more than the most basic service. More than 20 states have sued the FCC, and several governors have passed executive orders requiring ISPs doing business with their states to uphold net neutrality.

Wikimedia Today, United States Senators Edward J. Markey (D-MA), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Brian Schatz (D-HI), in partnership with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), announced that the U.S. Senate would vote on May ... "That may be true next week, but over time I suspect they will start violating".

For now, companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon have said they would not block or throttle Web access or charge more for faster delivery of online content.

"The gutting of net neutrality is a symbol of our broken democracy", Fight for the Future Deputy Director Evan Greer said in a statement. "But it has sparked an unprecedented backlash from across the political spectrum, and Internet users are coming out of the woodwork to fight tooth and nail in Congress, in the courts, and at the local and state level".

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from.
