Zverev comes back from brink to reach French Open last 16

Alexander Zverev French Open Federer

Zverev's star shone even brighter in the buildup to the French Open when he won the title in Madrid and led Nadal by a break in the final set of the Rome finale. The pair then traded breaks in the third set, and after Dzumhur stole ahead, he served out the set - but only after he saved two more break points in the 10th game.

The 27-year-old Bulgarian has still never reached the fourth round in Paris and he admitted after bowing out 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 that he will have to go back to the drawing board.

Nishikori will next play Austrian Dominic Thiem, the only man to beat Nadal on clay this year, after the seventh seed beat Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the last No. 2 seed that failed to reach the second week at the French Open was Andy Roddick in 2005.

Next up for Wozniacki is a sterner test in 14th seed Daria Kasatkina - who already has two wins over the Dane this season in St Petersburg and Indian Wells.

The last women's player to start her first-round match - rain contributed to that - was world No. 1 Simona Halep and the Romanian recovered from a slow start to dispatch another American, Alison Riske, 2-6 6-1 6-1 to start play on the main Philippe-Chatrier court.

The world No 3 will be the youngest quarter-finalist in Paris since a 20-year-old Juan Martin del Potro in 2009 and Zverev was clearly delighted with his achievement. It all came down to a winner-take-all fifth set which would require more than 12 games to decide.

He's also somehow only made the fourth round once before, at Wimbledon previous year.

Two different ladies's contenders, Petra Kvitova and Elina Svitolina, superior in straight units towards Lara Arruabarrena (6-Zero 6-4) and Viktoria Kuzmova (6-Three 6-4).

The latest gritty victory came with the usual temper flare-ups from Zverev.

Zverev, who picked up the 150th match win of his career on Friday, had overcome Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in a five-set thriller in the second round.

The French Open kicked off earlier this week, and several of the biggest names in the sport were in action, including Serena Williams, who struggled but ended up with a win in her debut.

Despite being the second seed at Roland Garros, the German is yet to make it to the fifth round of a glam slam tournament.

Novak Djokovic equaled Roger Federer's mark of reaching nine consecutive quarterfinals, by beating No. 30 seed Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

The 28-year-old saw off Simon 6-3, 6-1, 6-3.

They were playing their match later Sunday on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

In women's play, 13th-seeded Madison Keys reached the quarterfinals for the first time at Roland Garros after beating No. 31 Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania 6-1, 6-4 on Chatrier.

That was saved by a nerveless out-wide serve from the German who held, then broke for 6-5 before claiming victory when the Bosnian hit long. He was two points from the match but Dimitrov won back to back points to extend the match.
