Amid criticism at home, Trump eyes 2nd meeting with Putin

Mike Pompeo

On Twitter Thursday, Trump called the summit "a great success" and cited Ukraine among the areas discussed, without providing details.

The White House, with Trump under fierce criticism in the United States, did on Thursday reject Putin's proposal that Russian authorities be present for the questioning of Americans it accuses of "illegal activities", including a former USA ambassador to Moscow. "They are pushing so recklessly hard and hate the fact that I'll probably have a good relationship with Putin. We are doing MUCH better than any other country!"

Via Twitter, the president declared that "The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media".

At Monday's news conference, Putin described the proposal when he was asked about the possible extradition of 12 Russian intelligence officers indicted in the United States on charges of meddling in the 2016 election by carrying out cyber attacks on Democratic Party networks.

In an interview on MSNBC Thursday, Sen. "I don't think there was any nefarious attempt there to do anything, but that's history".

He said he hadn't seen Trump's invitation himself, but that "Russia was always open to such proposals".

The next day, after a barrage of criticism from Republicans as well as Democrats, Mr. Trump said he misspoke and that he accepts the findings of the US intelligence community. "The Russians do bold things, extraordinary things". "It's a risk", Coats said of the poisonings, which Russian Federation has denied.

Russian Federation has not yet spoken about any second meeting with the American president.

That rhetoric marked a turnabout from Trump's first, upbeat description of the sit-down.

In his first comments about the summit, Putin insisted that Russian Federation remains "open to contacts with the U.S".

According to WaPo, within the White House, Trump's advisors were pissed by Coats and his Aspen performance.

Trump has refined and sharpened his presentation since Helsinki.

Meanwhile, Russian politicians are angry at proposals by U.S. lawmakers to question Trump's translator about what the men discussed privately before their news conference. "In the United States, in Russian Federation, or anywhere else", he said in a statement.

Michael McFaul is photographed in 2013 as he leaves the the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow, when he was US ambassador to Russia.

"It is a proposal made in sincerity by President Putin, but President Trump disagrees with it", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

In an emoji-filled tweet, Hayden responded to a tweet from Washington Post columnist Max Boot who said that Trump's claiming he merely misspoke during his refusal to condemn Russian Federation for its alleged 2016 election interference was because the president is "deathly afraid of being laughed at".

The idea of allowing a foreign power to quiz US citizens sparked outrage and the US Senate voted 98-0 against it. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it was "not going to happen".

The Helsinki summit allowed them to start on "the path to positive change", he said, but added that he was cautious about the longer term.

White House officials didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

A number of senators are swiftly signing on to a bipartisan bill from Sens.

News of the invite caught many in Washington off-guard. Chris Coons, a Democrat from DE, that would assert support for the intelligence community and endorse its findings that Russian Federation intervened in the U.S. elections.

"In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word "would" instead of 'wouldn't, '" Trump said on Tuesday.
