Annapolis newspaper shooting suspect ID'd as Jarrod W. Ramos

The local ABC7 news reported

Then Ramos "went silent" for more than two years, Marquardt said.

Mass shootings are a common occurrence in the US.

A Capital Gazette reporter, Phil Davis, was in the building at the time of the attack and Tweeted unfolding events.

Davis described the scene as "nothing more terrifying" as he took cover under his desk while the gunman shot and killed multiple Gazette employees.

Two law enforcement sources said his fingerprints appeared to have been altered, which made it hard to identify him, but one law enforcement source said he was identified through facial recognition software.

Law enforcement in Baltimore and New York City deployed extra officers to the office of the New York Times and other major media outlets as a precaution, authorities said.

"I said during that time, "This guy is insane enough to come in and blow us all away, '" Marquart said, adding that he and other newspaper officials had fretted over how to stop Ramos" harassment. "Violence is never tolerated in any form, no matter whom it is against".

Multiple media reports said the suspect opened fire with a shotgun.

Nearly a year earlier, Thomas Hartley, a former columnist for The Capital, the group's flagship paper, wrote a column describing the suspect's interactions with an unnamed woman Mr Ramos contacted over Facebook, court documents showed.

As the case made its way through the courts, a Twitter user calling himself Jarrod W. Ramos posted numerous tweets critical of Capital Gazette, Mr Hartley and the Maryland judges. An appeals court later upheld the dismissal.

Krampf confirmed five deaths and said two people had superficial wounds.

"It was quite obvious that this person had some sort of vendetta against the Capital newspaper", said Lt. Ryan Frashure, a county police spokesman.

Police said the suspect, who was taken into custody without any shots being fired by officers, had used "smoke grenades" in the building, located at 888 Bestgate Road.

U.S. media identified the suspected shooter as Jarrod Ramos, whom the Sun said had a long-running dispute with the newspaper over a 2011 story "that covered a criminal harassment case against him".

A Twitter account matching Ramos' name with a location of Laurel, Maryland, includes years of tweets railing against Capital Gazette and includes details of a yearslong legal dispute with the company.

The Baltimore Sun - which owns the Gazette - reports that Ms Smith was a recently hired sales assistant at the paper.

Some described the terror of hiding under their desks.

A particularly chilling tweet was posted on August 26, 2015 - the same day a disgruntled employee of WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, Virginia, fatally shot and killed two reporters live on television.

"All I know is five people are dead", he said.

"I just want people to know what an incredibly gentle, generous and gifted guy my brother was", Carl Hiaasen told The Washington Post.

Reporter Selene San Felice told CNN she was at her desk but ran after hearing shots, only to find a back door locked. That set off months of emails in which he alternatively asked for help and was nasty to her, she said. "I was curled up, trying not to breathe, trying not to make a sound, and he shot people all around me".

"If they were not there as quickly as they were it could have been a lot worse", Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley said.

NY police sent counterterrorism teams to news organisations around the city in a move authorities said was a precaution, not prompted by any specific threat.

Fox News spent some time on air Thursday afternoon dissecting the Capital's political bent to see if any of its news articles or editorials might have incited such an incident, only to eventually conclude that it was a solid, local newspaper.
