Apple Music Snags US Market Share From Spotify

Major music distributor says Apple Music now has more US paying subscribers than Spotify

The report claimed that Apple Music and Spotify have over 20 million paid subscribers in the United States, with Apple Music "a hair ahead" from rival Spotify.

Three years after making its debut, it is being reported that Apple Music has surpassed Spotify's paid US subscriber count.

A new report, which says Apple Music has just surpassed the once-titan of the streaming audio space, comes by way of Digital Music News who has a source at a "US-based, major [music] distributor" with insight into the exact numbers.

According to the publication, the new report also indicates that Apple's growth rate in 2018 has far outpaced Spotify's, which suggests that Apple Music's lead will continue to grow in the coming months.

Globally, however, Spotify is still in the lead with over 160 million subscribers.

Apple Music and Spotify each have 20 million paid subscribers in the United States, according to an exclusive Digital Music News report. Apple Music, on the other hand, has only been around for three years.

Apple Music overtaking Spotify is a significant achievement, but it was not at all surprising.

It is unclear if Apple Music has also overtaken Spotify in terms of paid subscribers worldwide, but it will also not be a surprise if that has already happened.

Looked at more broadly, however, Apple serves what should be a fairly narrow market of iPhone owners, where Spotify is popular on both Android and iPhone. Spotify claimed 75 million paying customers at the end of March, whereas Apple claimed 50 million, a number that is skewed upward because many of those were on free trials.
