Donald Trump hails 'great victory' over travel ban ruling

Supreme Court upholds travel ban in major win for Trump

The ruling was 5-4 along partisan lines; Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion for the conservative majority.

"The Proclamation is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who can not be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices".

Vindicated by the Supreme Court's Tuesday ruling upholding his travel ban policy, President Trump called it a "tremendous victory" and a rebuke to the "hysterical commentary" from anti-Trump critics who'd accused him of religious hatred and racism.

"President Trump's original sin of targeting Muslims can not be cured by throwing other countries onto his enemies list", Romero added.

People protest the Muslim travel ban outside of the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC on June 26, 2018.

The "Trumped Up" author said the president had the legal authority to regulate immigration to secure the country's borders. Following the Supreme Court's decision, the president wrote on Twitter, in capital letters: "SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN".

"I am pleased the Supreme Court upheld the President's constitutional authority to protect our national security". In total the ban bars more than 150 million people from entering the United States.

The dissent also states that "a reasonably observer would conclude that [the ban] was motivated by anti-Muslim animus". Trump said in a White House statement.

The executive order banned travel from seven countries, five of which were Muslim-majority.

Sotomayor charged that, just as in Korematsu, their travel ban decision "invoked an ill-defined national security threat to justify an exclusionary policy of sweeping proportion". "The travel ban is atrocious policy, and makes us less safe and undermines our American ideals".

The lower federal courts had ruled that all three versions either violate federal law or are unconstitutional, excluding restrictions on travelers from the DPRK and government officials from Venezuela. Notably, the second version also eliminated the portion that gave preference to Christian refugees from the Middle East - a provision that encouraged the term "Muslim ban".

Booker pointed out that Trump spoke out against Muslims and Mexicans during his presidential campaign.
