Israel strikes Gaza militant sites, Palestinians fire rockets

Israel is prohibiting fuel and gas from entering Gaza until Sunday in an attempt to punish Hamas

Meanwhile, on Monday evening, Israel announced it would again close the Kerem Shalom crossing, the only crossing for commercial goods and the main crossing for humanitarian aid between Israel and Gaza, after a rocket was sacked into southern Israel earlier in the day despite a cease fire declared by Hamas late Saturday night.

Israel has accused Hamas and other Palestinian militant organisations of co-ordinating the arson attacks but numerous perpetrators are believed to be teenagers and children as young as... Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian teenager and a second protester died of his wounds on Saturday, Gaza health officials said.

Even after Hamas, the Palestinian group that runs Gaza, agreed to a cease-fire late on Saturday, incendiary kites and balloons have continued to float from Gaza into Israel setting off damaging fires to farmlands.

On Saturday, the Israeli military carried out waves of air strikes across the coastal territory in response to some of the most intensive bombardments from Gaza since the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas.

Livni's remarks came after an escalation in Gaza over the weekend, with Israel dropping an estimated 100 bombs on dozens of targets across the fenced-in enclave.

Multiple fires broke out throughout Monday along the Israeli border with Gaza but the IDF reported that the numbers were less than previously recorded.

Hamas warned of "dangerous consequences" over the new restrictions.

"This is what we did yesterday", Netanyahu said.

"The Israeli army is prepared and ready for any mission we give it", Lieberman said during a visit to the border area Tuesday.

Palestinians in Gaza view the balloons and kites as legitimate resistance against Israel's more than a decade-long blockade.

Hamas on Saturday said the barrage of rockets and mortar shells into Israeli territory overnight was sacked by the "resistance" to "stop Israeli escalation".

The European Union also criticized the restrictions, saying it "expects Israel to reverse these decisions" which risked "further aggravating the already dire economic situation in Gaza".

Another Hamas spokesman, Hazem Qassem, also denounced the decision as a "crime", saying it was in violation of all global laws and conventions.

The arson attacks began during mass demonstrations along the border, at which thousands of Palestinians have expressed their support for the declared right of Palestinian refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what is now Israel and also demanded an end to the blockade of Gaza imposed by Israel and Egypt. The Strip has been subject to a strict blockade for the past 11 years that Israel says is necessary to prevent terrorist groups from bringing weapons into the Strip.
