Japan floods: At least 100 dead after heavy rain and landslides

The swollen Kamo River is seen following heavy rain near the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto

"The record rainfalls in various parts of the country have caused rivers to burst their banks, and triggered large scale floods and landslides in several areas", Cabinet Secretary Suga said Sunday.

Pope Francis is praying for the victims of Japan's flooding and is encouraging civil authorities involved in search and rescue operations.

"My husband couldn't make it home from work since the road was flooded, and since it was pouring down rain I didn't have enough courage to walk to an evacuation center with two infants after dark", one woman wrote on Twitter, without giving further details. The younger, a first-grader, was a star and the hope of the depopulated island, the principal told NHK.

The Hiroshima Prefecture was hit the hardest with 37 people reported dead.

The town of Kaita, on the outskirts of Hiroshima, was also heavily damaged by flooding and landslides.

"Clothes in the drawers were all damaged by muddy water, we won't even bother to wash them".

Japan monitors weather conditions and issues warnings early, but its dense population means every bit of usable land is built on in the mostly mountainous nation, leaving it prone to disasters. Shinkansen bullet train services resumed on a limited schedule after they were suspended on Friday.

Temperature of up to 35.9 degrees Celsius was recorded in one city in Oita Prefecture, and Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned those staying in or providing emergency relief in evacuation shelters to be wary of heatstroke.

Kochi prefecture, which is on Shikoku, issued landslide warnings nearly over the entire island, the Associated Press reported.

"I'm most grateful to rescuers", said Shigeyuki Asano, a 79-year-old patient who spent a night without electricity or water.

Public broadcaster NHK showed overturned cars on roads covered with mud.

Almost 60 people still remain unaccounted for, according to national broadcaster NHK.

The rains since July 5, especially in the western prefecture of Hiroshima and the southwestern prefecture of Ehime, caused floods and landslides that destroyed thousands of houses and completely cut off several towns, reports Efe news.

The situation was particularly dire in Kurashiki City, in western Japan. More than 1,000 people were left temporarily on building roofs while waiting to be rescued. "Water and food" on a sheet on the roof.
