Mandela lecture: Five things Barack Obama said

"You have to believe in facts", said Mr Obama, "without facts there is no basis for co-operation".

Obama spoke in Johannesburg, South Africa, on what would have been the former South African President's 100th birthday.

Obama emphasised that globalisation was not going to go away, but - in a thinly veiled dig at current United States President Donald Trump - the only manner in which to address issues such as climate change and migration was through more worldwide cooperation than less.

Obama, speaking to 15,000 people at a stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday, gave an emotional address recalling the "wave of hope that washed through hearts all around the world" when Mandela was released from jail in 1990.

While not directly mentioning Trump by name, Obama's high-profile speech offered a counter-argument to many of his successor's policies, centered on a respect for human rights, the promotion of racial diversity and support for a free and independent press.

"That kind of politics is now on the move.at a pace which seemed unimaginable just a few years ago", said Obama. The crowd greeted him by enthusiastically chanting "Yes, we can" - an echo of Mr. Obama's famous election slogan.

"Just by standing on the stage honouring Nelson Mandela, Obama is delivering an eloquent rebuke to Trump", said John Stremlau, professor of global relations at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg.

"Find a way where you're not selling your soul", Obama said as he urged more political and community involvement, especially for women. I don't know where to start talking to you about this.

Obama told the crowd he enjoyed the more informal setting of town halls as he often saw ambitious "kindred spirits" who were "doing unbelievable things but so often feel isolated" and lacked the framework to take their ideas forward.

"We now stand at a crossroads, a moment in time in which two very different visions of humanity's future compete for the hearts and minds of citizens around the world".

"We see the utter loss of shame in political leaders when they're caught in a lie and they just double down and lie some more", Obama said.

When Obama was a U.S. senator he had his picture taken with Mandela. Mandela died aged 95 on December 5 2013.

In delivering the annual Nelson Mandela Lecture before thousands of South Africans, Obama is expected to highlight how the Nobel Peace Prize victor, who was imprisoned for 27 years, kept up his campaign against what appeared to be insurmountable odds to end apartheid, South Africa's harsh system of white minority rule.

It was an implicit rebuke of President Trump's "America First" policies, delivered at a moment when Trump was scolding North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies for what he saw as inadequate defense spending - something Trump did again last week.

The former United States president met Mandela only briefly in 2005 but gave a eulogy at his funeral, hailing him as "the last great liberator of the 20th century".

"It is because of the failure of the world order that we see the whole world trying to go back to the old more brutal way of doing business".

When Obama was a USA senator, he had his picture taken with Mandela. "The man went to prison for nearly three decades".
