MH370 investigators 'unable to confirm' cause of disappearance

The Malaysian government today issued what is meant to be a definitive report on the disaster - but provided very little in the way of answers. Communications equipment was also turned off. However, they were not ruling out any possibility since the in-air turn back was done manually and the systems in the plane were also manually turned off.

"The team is unable to determine the real cause for [Flight 370's] disappearance", the report states.

Monday's report didn't support either theory explicitly, but struggled to come up with a mechanical explanation for the aircraft's deviations.

Police didn't find any data that showed a similar route flown by Flight 370 and concluded that there were "no unusual activities other than game-related flight simulations", Kok said.

There was no psychological evidence to suggest any of the crew deliberately crashed the plane.

The U-turn was found to have been done by manual control, thereby putting to rest any theories that the plane could have been remotely hijacked. However, three items of debris have been confirmed to be from MH370. At the time of the crash, the plane had been carrying 221 kg of lithium-ion batteries.

However, the investigation team left open the possibility that there was "unlawful third party interference" in accounting for the pilots' decision to turn back.

Grieving families who had advanced sight of the report before its official release this morning said it provided no new answers, according to Reuters news agency.

"There is nothing new but it highlighted failings of some government agencies" that did not follow protocol and guidelines, said Grace Nathan, whose mother was on board the plane.

The report found Malaysian Air traffic controllers "did not initiate the various emergency phases as required", delaying the start of the search and rescue in the first crucial hours.

The "command of the English language" between Kuala Lumpar and Ho Chi Minh airports "needs improvement", the document added.

It said without the benefit of the examination of the aircraft wreckage and recorded flight data information, "the investigation was unable to identify any plausible aircraft or systems failure mode that would lead to the observed systems deactivation, diversion from the filed flight plan route and the subsequent flight path taken by the aircraft".

Ms Weeks, who moved from Perth to Queensland after the tragedy, said the search had to go on as the crash may have been due to a problem with the Boeing 777 model.

It is one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

Today's report comes two months after Malaysia called off a privately funded underwater search for the aircraft.

It was the second major search after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless A$200 million ($147.06 million) search across an area of 120,000 sq km (46,332 sq miles) previous year. He said however he hoped the government would try to find new clues and consider resuming the search. Investigators have never been able to explain why the jet abandoned its route shortly into the flight, traversed Malaysia and then cruised south over the Indian Ocean.

Federal Bureau of Investigation and Interpol flew in to help and 40 ships worked around the clock, with 34 aircrafts flying during daylight hours.

Scattered pieces of debris that washed ashore on African beaches and Indian Ocean islands indicated a distant remote stretch of the ocean where the plane likely crashed.
