Missing soccer team from Thailand found alive in flooded cave

The governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osottanakorn, said Thai navy Seals had found the group in the six-mile Tham Luang Nang Non cave, on the border with Laos and Myanmar, "all with signs of life".

After an exhaustive search, a dozen teenage Thai soccer players and their coach - who went missing in late June - were freed alive from a cave in Thailand on Monday.

Footage shot by rescuers shows the missing football team huddled together quietly in a dry area inside the cave where they've been missing for nine days.

The boys ventured into the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on Saturday 23 June but were trapped in the cave by torrential rain.

The governor added that authorities are also trying to send food into the cave but were unsure if "they can eat it or not because it is nearly 10 days".

As the days wore on with the group missing, distraught family members had placed fruit, desserts, sugary drinks and candies on mats near the cave as an offering to the spirits which some people believe protect the cave and the forest. Divers from Thai Navy SEAL units and rescue experts from the US, UK, China, and Australia coordinated to search the cave system and found the trapped team on Monday.

One of the options has allowed the rescue teams to descend to a depth of 200 meters, and they are continuing to go deeper, he added.

On Monday, the boys' families received news they had been praying for all along.

The moment a British rescuer reached the 12 boys who have been trapped in a Thai cave for 10 days has been captured on video.

"There's not much we can do right now".

He also said that the situation was being assessed and more rescue teams were going into the cave complex.

The rescue efforts at the Thaum Luang Nang Non cave have so far involved worldwide assistance from the "US, China, Australia and the United Kingdom", according to Olarn and Said-Moorhouse. So far we just found them.

12 teenage boys on a youth soccer team and their 25-year-old coach were found alive in a cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand Monday.

The disappearance led to a huge outpouring of support from across the world as people wanted to know how they could help the search efforts.

Continuing rains are causing flood levels to rise, and officials say conditions are "difficult". The lost cavers have been provided with sustenance in the meantime while rescuers figure out the best way to extract them from the network.

Rescuers said they believed the boys could stay alive by drinking fresh water in the cave, either dripping in through rocks or rushing in through the entrance. He said the diving teams included doctors.

Anmar Mirza, the US National Cave Rescue Commission co-ordinator, said the primary decision is one of whether to try to evacuate them or to supply them in place.
