Newspaper says it received threats following shooting

Jarrod ramos

Jarrod Ramos is charged with murder after police say he opened fire Thursday at Capital Gazette offices in Annapolis. But when the paper ran a column outlining details from the case, Ramos said he had been defamed.

Jarrod W. Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

Court documents and social media posts written by Ramos paint a portrait of an angry, frustrated man fuming about how he'd been mistreated and maligned. An online invitation said that "Rob would never want you to put on a suit for him, so the dress is "summer casual" and shorts are welcomed".

Of Winters, her daughter told the Sun, "My mother was a wonderful woman and a fantastic reporter".

"He was distant from the family". She said Saturday that the tragedy "feels so personal".

Later, in 2015, Ramos tweeted that he would like to see the paper stop publishing, but "it would be nicer" to see two of its journalists "cease breathing".

Error! There was an error processing your request. Her life was a gift to everyone who knew her and the world will not be the same without her. Ramos apparently responded, "I'm not going to cooperate".

An Anne Arundel officer wrote that during that call, he indicated that he did not believe Ramos was a threat to the paper's employees.

"In lieu of flowers", one of her children wrote, "please make a donation to the Girl Scouts of America, the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, or the American Red Cross".

Video taken by a witness who was inside the building where the Maryland newsroom shooting took place shows authorities leading the alleged killer out of the building seconds after police escorted other occupants out with their hands up.

The newspaper concluded at the time that, "the case is extreme". That touched off a yearslong tirade against the newspaper.

During the court battles, Ramos worked as an IT contractor for the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. A judge ordered him held without bail.

Brennan McCarthy, the lawyer who represented his former classmate, said Ramos' harassment of her was malicious.

"As I was hiding under my desk, I had my work phone on me", said reporter Phil Davis. He had a long-running feud with the paper and previously filed a defamation lawsuit against the publication in 2012. It tweeted several times about the paper and Hartley. It remains unclear where Ramos worked for the past four years. Investigators were reviewing his postings and searching his apartment in Laurel, Maryland, for clues to the violence. However, Anne Arundel County Chief Timothy Altomare said the newspaper ultimately declined to pursue charges over concerns it would "exacerbate an already flammable situation". He still does it to this day, as does the woman he stalked, he said.

"His defense of Michael Peroutka is particularly interesting since his views seem to echo Peroutka, a local politician and think tank leader, and other elements of the theocratic far right", Clarkson told the site.

As many of you may know from my writings, Annapolis, the historic and charming capital of Maryland, is my hometown, where my father, as rabbi, and my mother, as rebbetzin, devoted decades of their lives serving the century-old Congregation Kneseth Israel with passion and warmth - a synagogue and community that will always be dear to my heart.
