Park Sung-hyun claims Women's PGA Championship

GRAND RAPIDS MI- JUNE 17 Lee Anne Pace of South Africa hits her tee shot on the second hole during the final round of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give at Blythefield Country Club

South Korea's Park Sung-hyun won the KPMG Women's PGA Championship following the first three-way play-off in the tournament's 63-year history.

KILDEER, Ill. - Sung Hyun Park beat So Yeon Ryu on the second hole of a playoff in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship for her second major title.

Ryu was the overnight leader at 11-under but committed two double bogeys for a 73 in the final round, while blowing a two-shot lead with two holes to play to fall into the playoff.

Hataoka had threatened to steal a stunning victory with a 64, sitting in the clubhouse for a couple of hours to see whether her 10-under 278 total would be enough.

"I thought the tournament was gone", Jones said.

The New Zealander saw her faint hopes of contention disappear after she bogeyed the first two holes, before a slight correction when she birdied the par-3 3rd and par-3 6th. Park pumped her first in celebration, and went on to make par.

Ryu added a birdie at the par-5 11th but took a bogey at the par-3 13th to stand only one ahead of Nataoka, with Park closing to within one after a birdie at 14. She has made the cut in each of her 13 starts.

It's her first top 10 since late April when she finished T3 at the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship. She's earned $590,806 over the last two weeks after her win in Arkansas and the tie for second in IL.

"After the front nine I couldn't actually expect to be leading after the round", Ryu said after making four back-nine birdies to surge pass a spluttering Henderson.

Park, who shot a bogey-free 69 in the final round to force the playoff, said her dramatic day felt "like a dream". With her driver normally being the weapon that helps her excel over her competitors she hit just four fairways on Sunday.

Both players landed their second shots on the green, when the play was halted due to a threat of thunderstorms.

Prior to the tournament this weekend, Park changed her putter.

Park is still trying to learn to speak English. The American media sometimes struggle to connect with the Korean star. She tied for 10 at the U.S. Women's Open last month. "She doesn't back down". "I was even joking", Park said.

But this week, once again, Park sniffed victory. Against herself. Against blazing temperatures and stormy weather. Ryu, who won last year's ANA Inspiration and the 2011 US Women's Open, finished with a half dozen birdies.

It might be only the beginning of Park's LPGA career, but already, the legend has begun.
