Riders start 'most feared' stage in Tour de France

The tear gas was used by the police on farmers protesting the decline in state aid but some of it wound up in multiple racers' eyes

Wednesday marks a new chapter in Tour de France history as the classic race heads to Col du Portet, some 2,215 metres above sea level, for the first time in its history. We've just got to try and look after him now, these next few days.

Thomas now commands a lead of two minutes and 30 seconds over Froome, the 2017 Tour de France victor, with only four stages to go. "It just gave me confidence, that someone of his stature was struggling".

Anyway enough of the boring stuff we know you like the harsh, weird and brutal injuries. "I've won the last three Grand Tours and G's ridden an absolutely faultless race this year, so he fully deserves to be in the yellow jersey, and fingers crossed he finishes it off and gets the job done in Paris".

That's not your usual Sunday ride on a bike for sure.

"The truth is this is a well-deserved victory", said Quintana, "not only for me but for my team who worked really hard and aggressively for that".

Froome was ushered to the line by teammate Egan Bernal at 1:35 and dropped to third overall at 2:31 behind Thomas.

"This was all I had, this was all we had today", Dumoulin continued.

Team Sky said the rider was not injured in the incident, which came a day after police used tear gas to disperse a farmers' protest that had blocked the road with bales of hay.

Thomas, who has never previously been in a position to win a grand tour, is keeping his feet on the ground. The same Brit beat Dumoulin to second place when they both raced the Giro d'Italia last month.

Back in the peleton, Quintana, who started the day eighth in general classification, attacked on the climb and was able to catch up with MoviStar teammate Alejandro Valverde. The final mountain stage on Friday could prove to be a final hurrah for Froome, Bardet, Roglic, Nairo Quintana, or any combination of those names.

"Thomas has been the strongest, and that's the situation now", Dumoulin said. There was no way I'd have attacked him but it made me understand that the others had to be in trouble too.

Dutchman Dumoulin leapfrogged defending champion Froome into second, after a decisive attack 2 kilometres from the finish.

Yellow jersey-bearing Thomas latched onto his wheel immediately as did Primoz Roglic, but four-time Tour victor Froome had no response other than to grit his teeth and stick his tongue out.
