Ryan Lochte banned 14 months by USADA

TYR Sport Will Retain Ryan Lochte in Light of 14 Month Suspension

USADA slapped Ryan with a 14-month ban for getting an intravenous infusion in May 2018.

But for Olympic athletes, the act is a violation of strict U.S. Anti-Doping (USADA) policies that prohibit IV infusions, even of legal substances, if it's not related to a hospitalization or directly approved by USADA.

The 14-month ban, retroactive to May 24 when the investigation began.

Judging from Lochte's Instagram photo, he received the disqualifiying infusion at Revival IV Lounge in Gainesville.

United States anti-doping rules prohibit such infusions or injections unless hospital treatment or a surgical procedure is required.

The agency announced on Monday that Lochte, 33, accepted his suspension for "his use of a prohibited month", Deadspin reports. He was banned for 10 months after claiming he and three other USA swimmers were robbed at gunpoint at those 2016 Games, a tale that quickly unravelled. He only just returned to competition past year, and was planning on competing at the upcoming US national swimming championships in Irvine, California. This image prompted an investigation by U.S. Swimming.

"It's devastating to my family about this because I definitely made myself a better person after Rio, and I was back in training", Lochte said.

He said Monday he remained committed to swimming at the Olympics again. He has previously served a 10-month ban due to an incident at the Olympics in 2016.

"I know it sounds like a harsh penalty for something unintentional and where I didn't put anything prohibited in my body, but a rule's a rule and I accept that there was a technical violation and that I'll have to do this consequences", Lochte said.

"I may be on the sideline from competition, but I'll continue to train every day", he said. "I wasn't too clear on the rules, but now I am".

Lochte returned to competition a year ago, most notably winning the 200-meter individual medley at the U.S. Open. "I want nothing more than to earn the privilege to swim for my country in my fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020". He won gold medals at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Games and if he found a way to win another in Tokyo he would become the oldest Olympic swimming champion.
