Syrian opposition forces surrender key crossing point to regime

Anders Pedersen, the United Nations resident and humanitarian coordinator in Jordan said on Sunday that only about 150-200 people remained there.

Several witnesses along the Jordan border fence with Syria said they people saw a convoy of over a hundred armoured vehicles and tanks with Russian and Syrian state flags, along with hundreds of troops near Nassib.

Rebel strongholds in southern Syria have been crumbling since the government launched a ground offensive on the area last month, under the cover of Russian airstrikes.

State news agency SANA said military experts are dismantling explosives in the area.

Not only is a humanitarian disaster looming, but the fighting is concentrated in an area where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Israel meet.

Regarding the operation which resulted in establishing control over the Radar Battalion, another field commander said that as soon as the army established control over al-Nu'aima, preparations to storm the Battalion from several directions began, killing numerous terrorists who had barricaded themselves inside it.

Government forces would then take control of a key route running along the border with Jordan, up to the Nassib border crossing.

Negotiations had stalled Wednesday after Russian Federation "insisted" rebel groups surrender their heavy weapons immediately, joint command spokesperson Ibrahim Jabbawi told AFP.

"We only received information that the reopening of the crossing would not take a long time".

"They (rebels) destroyed the town, God will punish them", said a 50-year-old villager who returned to check on her home.

Still, the border has been closed since the rebels captured it in 2015.

A state television correspondent said the rebels had agreed to hand over heavy and medium weapons in all the towns and cities included in the surrender deal.

With no sign of intervention yet by his foreign foes, government forces seem set for another big victory in the war after crushing the last remaining rebel bastions near Damascus and Homs.

Although local communities in Syria have opened their doors to take in numerous displaced, most are forced to live in open spaces or in makeshift shelters that offer little safety and protection from the elements, he added.

The intense Syrian and allied Russian air strikes on Daraa and Quneitra provinces came to a halt as rebels made their announcement, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor.

Daraa lies in a wider southern region that Assad aims to retake, including the neighbouring province of Quneitra to the west, which borders the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Syria's war has killed 350,000 people and displaced millions of others since it started with the brutal repression of anti-Assad protests in 2011.

"As for the notion that Assad will push Iran out after achieving victory, the return of his forces to the south means just the opposite", Ghaddar and Smyth wrote.
