Trump administration files World Trade Organization complaint against Canada’s retaliatory tariffs

China announced it filed a World Trade Organisation challenge today to US President Donald Trump's proposal for a tariff hike on Dollars 200 billion of Chinese goods, reacting swiftly amid deepening concern about the economic impact of their spiralling technology dispute.

Nonetheless, European officials suggest that Trump, who has also targeted Europe with tariffs, has created a widow of opportunity to show that EU-China relations can be a bulwark for global trade.

The remarks came just after the country's second quarter data pointed to an economic slowdown, raising concerns about the potential fallout from a full-blown Sino-U.S. trade war.

Lighthizer said the US would take "all necessary actions" to protect USA interests and urged trading partners to "work constructively" with the Trump administration to address overcapacity in both metal sectors.

The Financial Times reported meanwhile that the Trump administration has rejected an European Union call for an exemption from fresh United States sanctions on companies operating in Iran.

Lighthizer argues that instead of working with the Trump administration to address a common problem, some USA trading partners have chosen to retaliate with tariffs aimed at punishing American workers, farmers and companies.

"Today we are facing a dilemma: whether to play a tough game, such as tariff wars and conflict in places like Ukraine and Syria, or to look for common solutions based on fair rules", Tusk said. Trump fuelled the rising rancour in an interview aired on Sunday in which he labelled the EU, Russia and China as "foes" of the US.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude fell $1.11 to $69.90 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. "In fact, the USA and Ontario share numerous same goals".

"It seems the whole world is his enemy", French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves le Drian told reporters, adding Trump's remarks should be taken with a grain of salt.

The Trump administration has criticized the WTO for encroaching on USA legal sovereignty and failing to rein in China's alleged violation of global trading rules.

"Despite the heated global rhetoric around trade and associated financial market volatility, China's export sector performed well in the second quarter of the year and will probably prove quite resilient under the limited tariff actions we anticipate from the USA and China", he added.

Xi said China stands ready to work with the EU on the basis of mutual respect, fairness, justice and win-win cooperation, to make still further progress in the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership and promote bilateral economic and social development and people's welfare.

A Commerce Ministry spokesman said last week Beijing hoped they would lobby Washington to protect their own interests.

Freeland has insisted that Canada introduced stronger safeguards on steel well before the USA imposed the tariffs. The federal government has said it's consulting with industry so even more can be done to address the diversion and dumping of aluminum and steel in the Canadian market.

Trump is threatening 10 percent tariffs on this round of goods.

There is deep skepticism in the European Union about China's actual commitment to opening its market further, as well as concern that it seeks to divide the world's largest trading bloc with its economic influence in Eastern Europe. Hearings on the proposed auto tariffs are set for Thursday and Friday in Washington.
