Trump threatens to ‘shut down’ government if Dems don’t support border measures

Will the economy Trump the President's other problems

On the other side of the aisle, Rep.

Democrats and some Republicans have objected to some of the changes Trump seeks. Add Donald Trump as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Donald Trump news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Congress must pass a spending bill by the end of September to avert a government shutdown, and Trump on Monday reiterated his demand that immigration reforms, including $25 billion for construction of a wall on US border with Mexico, be included in any spending package.

Instead, he simply listed his standard set of preferred policies - including ending what he calls "chain migration", the policies that can ease migration for the family members of individuals lawfully present in the United States; ending the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program; ending "these disgusting catch and release principles", otherwise known as releasing immigrants and asylum-seekers from detention as they await court dates; and funding a border wall.

Both chambers will have a short window to approve a spending bill before government funding expires.

Trump has returned his focus to the immigration issue in recent days as the Russian Federation investigation heats up around him.

In another tweet on the subject Sunday, Trump wrote: "Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes".

Trump is also defending U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying it defends the U.S. against "MS-13 nests" of "bad, bad people".

A wall on the southern border has been a rallying cry for Trump since he launched his presidential campaign when he said he would build the barrier but Mexico would pay for it.

In May, Trump suggested "closing up the country for a while" if he did not get his wall. The last spending bill funded $1.6 billion for border barriers, but that money does not apply to new construction. But Democratic solidarity over the matter did not last long, and they backed down quickly. They do, however, have the strength to derail legislation in the closely divided Senate. He said the border funding issue in particular would probably have to wait until after the elections.

His former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, goes on trial Tuesday and his former attorney Michael Cohen is reported to have said Trump knew about the infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting when it happened.

Trump's Twitter threat introduced a fresh wild card for congressional negotiators to deal with as the remaining legislative days tick down before government funding runs out - an explosive prospect for both parties with just 100 days until the midterm elections.

Some of his supporters were disappointed, believing he had passed up on his best opportunity to wring full wall funding from Congress.

House Republicans released a spending bill this month that provides five billion dollars (£3.81 billion) next year to build Mr Trump's wall, a major boost.

As CNN noted, the proposal showed that Trump was moving fully away from the idea that Mexico would fund it.
