White House says remains of Korean War soldiers returned

Kim Jong-un left agreed the soldier transfer

In Wonsan the North Koreans turned over what they say are an initial 55 cases holding remains, a United States official told CNN's Ryan Browne.

"It is accompanied by service members from United Nations Command Korea and technical experts from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency", a press statement issued by the White House said earlier.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their meeting at the Peace House at the truce village of Panmunjom inside the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, South Korea, April 27, 2018.

The U.S. team would then fly to Osan Air Base south of Seoul for a dignified transfer ceremony to U.S. Forces Korea.

More than 36,000 USA troops died in the Korean War.

The head of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said this morning that the U.S. military will be in North Korea today as remains of service members killed during the Korean War are handed over.

The White House statement said the USA government was "encouraged by North Korea's actions and the momentum for positive change".

He said: "After so many years, this will be a great moment for so many families. Thank you to Kim Jong Un", the president wrote.

Sixty-five years to the day after the signing of an armistice that ended hostilities in the conflict, a us military plane flew the remains to Osan Air Base in South Korea after collecting them from North Korean officials in the port city of Wonsan. From there, they are expected to be taken to the DPAA laboratory in Hawaii where they will be identified. North Korea soon accused the United States of making a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization" while failing to offer corresponding US incentives to improve ties.

Between 1990 and 2005, 229 sets of remains from the North were repatriated, but those operations were suspended when ties deteriorated over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

But Yonhap reported Thursday that the North would begin returning the remains. The group collected the remains of what were believed to have been 220 USA soldiers.

According to Fox, American officials are expecting the return of 55 sets of remains from North Korea on Friday.

The White House said the move was the first step in achieving the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. -North Korean searches at major battle sites in the North to recover more remains. The North also said USA officials came up with various "conditions and excuses" to backtrack on the issue of formally ending the war.

Speaking to CBS regarding the denuclearisation process, President Trump said on Tuesday: "I'm in no real rush".

"As we have stated before, we are committed to building a peace mechanism with the goal of replacing the Armistice agreement when North Korea has denuclearized", the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. However, reviving it could complicate USA efforts to persuade countries around the world to maintain economic pressure on Pyongyang over its ballistic and nuclear programs.
