Iran nuclear deal: European Union shields firms from United States sanctions law

Iranian President Rouhani and his Austrian counterpart Van der Bellen inspect a guard of honor in Vienna

"As far as the people suffering obviously they have had a rough time".

During past unrest, conservative outlets have focused on attacks against sensitive symbols such as religious buildings as a way of tarnishing the protests. The nation's currency is collapsing, more than 100 global companies announced their intent to leave the country, and unemployment is rising. "We are very intent on using these authorities", a third USA official said, and will "use them aggressively".

Hassan Rouhani said there could be no talks as long as Washington was reneging on the deal. Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

"Most have two passports and their families are overseas".

Under such circumstances negotiations can not be held, he said, adding that the Iranian people will resist the pressures and will conquer finally.

In recent days, protests have broken out in several cities, with at least one person shot and killed.

Many believe the United States wants to drive a wedge between Iran's leadership and the Iranian people with the potential goal of regime change, which Washington has denied.

Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment programme in return for the lifting of crippling Western sanctions.

President Trump on Monday renewed sanctions on Iran as he followed through on vows to unravel the Obama-era nuclear deal with Tehran.

Asked if Iran would be able to evade the new sanctions, Pompeo told reporters that "the United States is going to enforce the sanctions".

He said Iran had "always welcomed negotiations", but that Washington would first have to demonstrate it can be trusted.

The United States has told third countries they must halt imports of Iranian oil from early November or face US financial measures.

The U.S. resumed sanctions targeting Iran's automotive sector as well as gold and other key metals on Monday. The protesters are angry about corruption within the regime and the use of the country's wealth to fund malign activities in the region instead of helping the Iranian people.

In November, the U.S. will follow up with another round of sanctions targeting Iran's lifeblood: its oil exports.

"Based on existing agreements, five new ATR aircraft will land at Mehrabad Airport at 9am (04:30 GMT) tomorrow [Sunday]", the national carrier said on its Telegram channel.

European foreign ministers say they "deeply regret" the re-imposition of US sanctions on Iran.

A mechanism has also been opened to allow European Union businesses affected by the sanctions to sue the USA administration in the national courts of member states.

The transition period was meant to provide companies already doing business with Iran some time to wind down their activities.

"We are already seeing auto prices going through the roof over fears about raw material imports", she told AFP. "We are seeing a substantial impact".

In July, Iranian Supreme Leader's Top Adviser for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said Tehran would be present in Syria and Iraq at the request of these countries' legitimate governments and would not leave despite the threats voiced by the United States.

"There is a massive loss of confidence in the financial system and the government's ability to control things and withstand sanctions".
