President Trump's Personal Bookkeeper Granted Immunity in Cohen Investigation

So, Which Unidentified Tech Company Got That $50,000 In Michael Cohen Payoffs?

Americans would revolt if President Donald Trump is eventually impeached under some phony "political" reason by the newly-elected and potentially hostile presidential Congress, Rudy Giuliani has claimed.

Weisselberg, the 71-year-old Trump Organization CFO, is intimately familiar with Trump's business dealings, having overseen his corporate ledgers through his rise in the NY real estate world and his global dealings in the years before he launched his presidential bid.

Now the private and loyal Weisselberg is in the spotlight as the latest Trump confidant, and perhaps the most significant, to strike a deal with federal investigators for protection and to tell what he knows.

Federal prosecutors have reportedly granted immunity to the executive in charge of the National Enquirer amid an investigation into hush money payments made on behalf of US President Donald Trump.

Allen Weisselberg was handling the books when Fred Trump ran the company in the early 1970s. He has served as executive vice-president and chief financial officer of the organization for decades.

He arranged for the Trump Organization to reimburse Cohen, who paid $130,000 to adult film star Stormy Daniels in October 2016 in exchange for her silence on an alleged one-night stand with Trump in 2006, the Journal said.

Plus, the president is contending with the US attorney's office in Manhattan, which is known not just for taking on aggressive cases but also for its expertise in financial crimes.

It started with former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti's thread about the implications of Weisselberg "flipping".

Cohen's plea also gives state and local authorities a toehold to launch probes of the business's financial statements and tax records, said Paul S. Ryan, vice president for policy and litigation at Common Cause, a Washington-based government oversight group. "But if they're reading our content, I guess that's a good thing, but then they might just be yelling into the void like people do on Twitter", she said.

A year ago, Trump told The New York Times that Mueller would be crossing a "red line" if he began to look at Trump's and his family's finances unrelated to Russian Federation. Unlike in federal cases, Trump has no power to pardon crimes charged by state prosecutors and no authority to shut down a state investigation into his business.

Despite the momentary levity, though, Trump is increasingly frustrated and isolated as the investigations that have long dogged his White House plunge into the personal territory he once declared off-limits. But prosecutors said that there was no retainer.

It is the latest fallout from the wider inquiry launched by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in May 2017 into suspected collusion between the Trump election campaign and Russian Federation. However, the president insisted the money didn't come from the campaign.

Separately, the NY state taxation agency has also issued a subpoena to Cohen, asking for information related to another state investigation - this one into the Donald J. Trump Foundation. It's not known whether the documents were preserved.

"It means that Individual-1 needs a real lawyer", he said.

The officials who spoke to the Times said the DA's office has not yet made a decision on whether to proceed and the review is only in the earliest stages.

Jenny Johnson Ware, a Chicago criminal tax defense attorney, said the details of the Cohen case raise tax questions.

A Cincinnati newspaper is making unwanted headlines after being mistaken for the National Enquirer, the supermarket tabloid whose safe is said to be holding damaging stories about President Trump.

"Mr. Weisselberg is a bookkeeper who simply carries out directions from others about monetary payments and transfers, " he said.

"You never know where that company - you never know what he's gonna be -" Cohen says.
