Russian Embassy refutes allegations about Moscow's influence on Charlottesville protests

Police plan to control downtown with over 1,000

Russia's Embassy in the United States has dismissed claims that Russian Federation played a role in fanning racial tensions at a violent white nationalist rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia one year ago. Handguns, however, will not be banned, because of state and federal gun rights law, officials said.

Referring to the deaths last year of 32-year-old Heather Heyer and two police officers killed in a helicopter crash the same day, Northam said, "Virginia continues to mourn the three Virginians who lost their lives in the course of the demonstrations a year ago".

Russia's interference in U.S. policy could have led to an aggravation of the situation during the protest in Charlottesville previous year.

Virginia's Democratic governor, Ralph Northam, pre-emptively declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, a procedural move that freed up additional resources.

A release on the emergency declarations said this is to address the potential impacts of events in and around Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. that will take place this weekend.

"Considering US politicians' irresponsible behavior, we will not be surprised if they accuse Russian Federation of organizing the protests in Washington on August 12, 2018, timed to the anniversary of the Charlottesville events as well". The event drew hundreds of white nationalists from across the country to the Virginia college town.

A statement released by Governor Ralph Northam said the goal behind the declaration is "to address the potential impacts of events in and around the City of Charlottesville and outside of Washington, D.C., on August 10-12, 2018". The report criticized the police chief at the time for his "slow-footed response" and found that police failed on multiple fronts, leading to "deep distrust of government" in the local community. A 20-year-old OH man, James Alex Fields, said to have harbored Nazi sympathies, was charged with murder, malicious wounding and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Several counter-protester organizers have also planned out events. One goal, he said, was to separate cars and pedestrians in the central part of the city.

Citizens and media outlets seeking information related to current events in the Charlottesville area are encouraged to follow social media accounts for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia.
