Apple Watch, AirPods may be spared from Trump’s China tariffs

President Donald Trump escalated his trade war with China on Monday, imposing 10 per cent tariffs on about US$200 billion (S$275 billion) worth of Chinese imports.

Tariffs of between five and 10 percent will take effect on some 5,200 USA products on Monday, on the same day as the new U.S. duties, the finance ministry said.

China's Finance Ministry said its tariff increases are aimed at curbing "trade friction" and the "unilateralism and protectionism of the United States".

Such a move risks deepening the standoff, with President Donald Trump saying in a statement on Monday the U.S. would immediately pursue further tariffs on about $267bn of Chinese imports if Beijing retaliates.

Last month, China unveiled a proposed list of tariffs on $60 billion of U.S. goods ranging from liquefied natural gas to certain types of aircraft - should Washington activate the tariffs on its $200 billion list.

The US administration said it is giving US businesses a chance to adjust and look for alternative supply chains by delaying an increase to 25 percent on January 1 for the US$200 billion batch of Chinese goods, said two senior US administration officials who briefed reporters on Monday.

Trump said China was trying to use trade to undermine him with his supporters before the November 6 congressional election.

It is also the biggest set of tariffs to date, and unlike the earlier rounds this latest list targets consumer goods, such as luggage and furniture.

President Donald Trump said the latest round of tariffs was in response to China's "unfair trade practices, including subsidies and rules that require foreign companies in some sectors to bring on local partners". The action would bring the total amount of Chinese products subject to duties to $250 billion, roughly half of the amount the United States imported from that country in 2017.

The statement from the Ministry of Commerce didn't note specific actions, though China has previously said it would retaliate with levies on $60bn worth of United States goods.

China said it will retaliate if the United States goes ahead with these tariffs, and there is a risk it may cancel their upcoming trade talks.

The $200 billion in USA tariffs go into effect in less than a week, on September 24, leaving the two sides little time to sit down. - From Harley-Davidson motorcycles and U.S. bourbon to Chinese parts and machinery, the world's two largest economies have exchanged punitive tariffs that slice through a wide swath of products.

Geng said he would not comment on "hypotheticals" such as what measures Beijing might consider apart from tariffs on U.S. products, saying only that details would be released at the appropriate time.

Speaking at the White House, Trump promised "some very positive news" and said that "it will be a lot of money coming into the coffers".

Trump added. Trump won the 2016 presidential contest with strong support from those farmers and blue-collar voters. "More tariffs not only punish American consumers, manufacturers, and businesses of all sizes, they will also diminish the opportunity to negotiate with the Chinese and address long-standing trade issues".

The tariffs will apply to 5,207 items.

Its decision to retaliate against the latest salvo from Trump raises the prospect of further escalation in the trade war. The administration is targeting a bewildering variety of goods - from sockeye salmon to baseball gloves to bamboo mats - forcing US companies to scramble for suppliers outside China, absorb the import taxes or pass along the cost to their customers. Those goods will now be taxed 10 percent. The US president has launched numerous trade conflicts with a number of partners, including US ally the European Union, stating that trade deficits hurt the American economy. The Chinese matched those tariffs, with duties on American imports.
