Hurricane Florence: Footage Of Dangerous Storm Surge Is Spreading

Wind, flooded roads herald approach of Hurricane Florence in North Carolina

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The outer edges of Hurricane Florence began lashing coastal North Carolina with heavy winds and flooding roads on Thursday hours before expected landfall that will bring walls of water and lingering downpours.

As Florence reaches landfall, storm surges are the biggest concern, with 49% of U.S. hurricane deaths attributed to surges.

Storm surge is deadly.

Florence's weakening as it neared the coast created tension between some who left home and authorities who anxious that the storm could still be deadly. It's going to be cloudy, breezy and kinda muggy. The storm's forward speed had slowed to 6 miles per hour, and forecasters were concerned it might have stalled. Showers should start to move in overnight Friday. Most of this will fall, though, between Sunday and Monday. More impactful weather will arrive through the day Friday and into the weekend. Cooper said there will be more shelters opening as needed and "as we speak". That would put this in as one of the highest rain events in Charlotte's history. "I just figured come here and be safe". The other threat is wind.

Experts agreed that despite Florence losing some power, it was still poised to sow just as much destruction - if not more. And then we have the brief tornado spin-ups that we could see at any time as well.

The Colgate Raiders were set to take on the Furman Paladins in Greenville, South Carolina on Saturday. The mountains haven't been talked about enough. Intervals of heavy rain will continue to sweep across the state.

Before, the National Hurricane Center feared that Florence would make landfall as a Category 4 storm. Locally higher amounts for storm surge are possible along the rivers and sounds near New Bern, NC.

Hurricane force winds are extending outwards from the centre of the storm by 80 miles. That basically became a larger blade on a bulldozer which allowed it to push more water to the coast.

Duke Energy said it would close a pair of nuclear power reactors at its Brunswick plant on the Cape Fear River, about four miles from Southport, N.C. The company said its procedures required closing the plants when facing sustained 75 mph winds, even though the plants were created to withstand winds of more than 200 mph and a storm surge of 22 feet. Emerald Isle is about 84 miles (135 kilometers) north of Wilmington. With it, the storm will drop significant rainfall across the Grand Strand - 15 inches to 20 inches and the Midlands - 4 inches to 10 inches. More than 1,500 Red Cross disaster workers are helping Hurricane Florence relief efforts. Focus on the impact on the storm.

Still, a storm surge can overwhelm the animals, as it did in 2003 when Hurricane Isabel killed five horses and swept three others a few miles away.

Storm surge is caused in part by the brunt of hurricane force winds.

"The limited number of hubs being impacted by Florence will likely limit the scale of disruption that cascades through the national air travel system", FlightAware said in its noon report.

Some people have made a decision to simply ride out the storm at home. The rain threat is just going up.

By late Thursday, people were, for better or for worse, locked into their decision: go or stay. Don't let your guard down. "But we still bought the meals we were going to have and requested that the hotel serve those meals to the people who have been relocated, on us".
