Serena Williams slams 'hearsay' Maria Sharapova book ahead of French Open clash

Serena keen to ‘move on’ from US Open row

Serena Williams has said she is bewildered by her coach Patrick Mouratoglou's admission that he was coaching her during the tennis star's controversial US Open final defeat against Japan's Naomi Osaka.

"I don't see the difference, to be honest", said Kvitova, who was surprised someone as experienced as Williams had reacted so strongly to the coaching violation. "So you said you made a motion, now you told people that you're coaching me; that doesn't make sense".

SERENA Williams has opened up on her chaotic US Open final in an interview with The Project's Lisa Wilkinson.

The Sunday Project host sat down in NY with Williams for an in-depth chat that will air on tonight's episode of the Network Ten panel show - and it was a question about Williams' infamous U.S. Open meltdown that saw things get "sticky", as Wilkinson put it.

Japan's Osaka won the September 8 final 6-2, 6-4 after a match which saw Williams warned for coaching, penalized a point for smashing her racket and then docked a game for an outburst in which she called the umpire, Carlos Ramos, a "thief" and a "liar".

In Wilkinson's interview, filmed just three days after the incident, it appears Williams' handlers had given the broadcaster a strict limit on the amount of questions she could ask about the unfolding scandal.

"What I'm trying to do most of all is to just recover from that".

"I asked him "what are you talking about you were coaching?"

I requested him: there are not any clues there.

And here, you know, this is a new event, but all of us players want to win so much. Lest we forget, Williams was vying to tie Margaret McCourt's 24 Grand Slam record that night, one year after a near death experience postpartum, so the stakes were very high.

"Sometimes, when you get the violation, it is just a violation, and it is nothing, at the end of the day", said the fifth-ranked Czech. I think this is just one of her best surfaces, and she always does really, really well here.

That resulted in a second violation, meaning Osaka was awarded the first point of the sixth game. You owe me an apology.

Earlier, Williams took aim at her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, for admitting that he was coaching her.

'So I don't have any negative feelings towards her, which again, was a little disappointing to see in that hearsay book, ' Williams continued. "Sash [Osaka's coach Sascha Bajin] was coaching as well".

"I think she has a point in some of what she's saying", Wozniacki told reporters in Wuhan.

'You know, I was, like, Oh, okay.

Following the interview, Wilkinson revealed to her co-hosts that she was told to steer clear of asking the US star about Mark Knight's controversial cartoon published in the wake of the US Open.
