State Dept Official Suggests Real Motivation Of Anonymous Anti-Trump Op-Ed

President Donald J. Trump delivers remarks from the White House

Trump said revealing the writer's name was in the interests of national security.

He told reporters, "It's not mine" and said The Times should not "have chosen to take a disgruntled deceptive bad actor's word for anything and put it in their newspaper".

The theory that Mr Pence wrote the article largely stems from the use of the word "lodestar", a term meaning "star that leads or guides" and one which the vice-president has frequently used. "Journalistically and many different standpoints, and maybe even from the standpoint of national security, we'll find out about that", he continued.

Trump called Woodward's book "total fiction", and Defense Secretary James Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly have denied that they bashed the president.

President Donald Trump speaks to the press aboard Air Force One Friday as he travels to Fargo, North Dakota, to speak at a Joint Fundraising Committee.

"I am proud to serve as a member of President Trump's Cabinet to advocate on behalf of America's 30 million small businesses". "But we believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic".

Trump lashed out at the author of the anonymous piece - and at the "dishonest" Times. "And I guess, if you get right down to it, it is up to me, but I don't want to do anything that's going to hurt us or potentially hurt us, because I have a feeling that the Republicans are going to do very well". The paper says the author requested anonymity and that this was essential to deliver an "important perspective" to its reader.

Trump lambasted The Times and the op-ed's author, whom he described as someone "who's failing and probably here for all the wrong reasons", during a speech at the White House on Wednesday.

"But no one wanted to precipitate a constitutional crisis".

In a highly unusual situation, the author was identified only as "a senior official in the Trump administration".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders branded the piece "pathetic, reckless, and selfish" and condemned the Times for publishing it.

Short parts of Fear: Trump in the White House were published Tuesday in The Washington Post.

Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews, the respected White House chronicler describes a coalition of like-minded aides plotting to prevent the United States president from destroying the world trade system, undermining national security, and sparking wars.
