The Economist stands by decision to include Steve Bannon in event

After the initial invite to the controversial Bannon caused an uproar David Remnick the magazine’s editor told staff members on Monday that he is canceling the former Breitbart chief’s appearance

Former Chief Strategist Donald Trump is calling the New Yorker and editor David Remick "gutless" after he was dumped from their upcoming festival.

The New Yorker has disinvited Steve Bannon from the magazine's upcoming annual festival, after several high-profile celebrities balked at the idea of appearing alongside the man credited with numerous divisive strategies that propelled Donald Trump's presidential campaign.

Jimmy Fallon, Jim Carrey, Judd Apatow, Patton Oswalt and John Mulaney were all scheduled to appear, but one by one they began to make it clear that if Bannon were the headliner, they wouldn't be showing up at all.

Remnick said that interviewing Bannon wasn't the same as endorsing him. "Could never happen", said Carrey.

The New Yorker's reversal, however, was also criticised by conservative commentators.

A letter from Remnick, dated June 28, details the invitation to Bannon. "The audience itself, by its presence, puts a certain pressure on a conversation that an interview alone doesn't do".

The New Yorker's announcement on Bannon came earlier Monday and was denounced by Roxane Gay, Jessica Valenti and many others.

"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues - and I've re-considered", Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced Trump and his administration, wrote of his decision on Bannon.

Since leaving the White House previous year, Bannon has continued to champion right-wing causes, including supporting British anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson, who was freed from prison last month after winning a legal challenge over contempt charges. In a statement released on Twitter, David Remnick, the magazine's editor, said he had changed his mind after facing criticism on social media.

He said he would consider interviewing him instead in a "traditionally more journalistic" setting in the future.

No one wants a festival of ideas to turn into a cozy chat among like-minded friends. British writer Laurie Penny tweeted Monday that she "cannot in good conscience appear at an event which chooses to dignify a neo-nationalist like Steve Bannon". I have already made that very clear to David Remnick. He added, "I have the freedom to refuse to share a festival with him". Farrow took his report to The New Yorker, which published it seven weeks later, earning Farrow a Pulitzer and helping spark the #MeToo movement.

Bannon, who was to headline the prestigious festival, denounced Remnick in a statement.

"I would like to invite you to sit down with me for an informal, free-ranging discussion of the political movements redefining global and local politics".
