Tillis delivers opening statement at Supreme Court Hearing

'Mob rule' rocks US Senate hearing for judge

Kavanaugh said agencies can't use old laws to do a new thing.

Many reports claimed that Judge Kavanaugh thought the president was above the law.

"I can't give you an answer on that hypothetical question", Mr Kavanaugh said.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey said they would have had to read 7,000 pages an hour overnight just to review the files shared on Monday evening.

Grassley argued the panel has already received more than 400,000 pages of Kavanaugh-related documents. Security personnel removed dozens of demonstrators from the room.

After Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley opened the hearing, Democrats protested the withholding of the documents and asked to have the hearing adjourned.

"We can not possibly move forward".

This doesnt mean the Democrats are done with demagoguery.

Though Wednesday's hearing was less acrimonious than Tuesday's, it remained tense, with the shouts from protesters at times interrupting the proceedings.

Vermont's senior senator accused the judge of being aware of emails stolen from Leahy and other Democrats from 2001 to 2003 and having knowledge of the warrantless surveillance of United States citizens that went into effect in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

The wide-ranging testimony underscored the potential for Kavanaugh's nomination to shape the supreme court and the decisions before it for decades to come.

Based on Kavanaugh's past, it appears he would take a more conservative approach to cases, Clark added.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, left, speaks with Sen.

Republicans hold a slim Senate majority and can confirm Kavanaugh if they stay united. They characterized the hearing as a "charade and mockery of our norms". That is the period of time when Kavanaugh served as Bush's staff secretary - and for which the White House has said no documents need to be produced because they involve confidential discussions.

On Tuesday, the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh began. Senate Democrats have vowed a fierce fight. Kavanaugh underscored the importance of judicial independence, saying, "That takes some backbone". They're also asserting that the Senate is "phoning in" its responsibility to carefully vet judicial nominees, calling the process a "sham".

As protesters in the audience screamed while being dragged out of the hearing room, Kavanaugh sat fingers intertwined, quietly staring ahead. "I can tell you for a fact that Brett didn't know, because no one knew" aside from some other staffers. "We shouldn't have to put up with this kind of stuff".

Grassley and company this week are striving mightily to ensure that a historically unpopular president who picked a historically unpopular Supreme Court nominee will likely get that nominee onto the court despite an unprecedented amount of secrecy over the nominee's record. But the Democratic frustrations that boiled over on September 4 had been simmering for more than two years.

US President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee has declined to say whether he thinks sitting presidents can be made to comply with a legal subpoena.

But demonstrations continued inside the US Senate building where Kavanaugh was being quizzed on Wednesday, with occasional outbursts from protesters, such as: "Sham president, sham justice!" and "No Trump puppet!" "I am not a pro-prosecution or pro-defense judge".

Republican Sen. John Cornyn described the scene saying, "this is the first confirmation hearing subject to mob rule".

Should he win confirmation, Kavanaugh would be Trump's second nominee on the nine-member bench, and could solidify a hard-right court majority and help shape key aspects of American society for a generation.

Kavanaugh-a deeply controversial figure seen by progressives as a threat to women's healthcare rights-was asked about Roe v Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that protects the right to abortion.

They are concerned that Kavanaugh will push the court to the right on abortion, guns and other issues, and that he will side with President Trump in cases stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.
