Trump Threatens Additional Tariffs on $267 Billion of Chinese Goods

Trump delivered his news to a scrum of reporters on Air Force One, telling them that the new tariffs could come "very soon depending on what happens", according toBloomberg.

Gao said the two sides were still in contact and communicating on a working level, and "exchanging opinions on issues of mutual concern to work towards resolving the China-US trade problems". And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267bn ready to go on short notice if I want.

Apple is highly exposed to a trade war between the U.S. and China.

Cook has, so it seems, changed his mind, and Trump threatened to impose another set of tariffs on top of a proposed $200 billion.

Trump seems eager to reach the point where the United States can outgun China on tariffs, because we import so much more than they do.

The Commerce Ministry expressed confidence Thursday that China can maintain "steady and healthy" economic growth despite the trade pressure.

It now is the world's most valuable publicly traded company with over a $1 trillion market cap. It makes many of its products for the USA market in China, and it also sells gadgets including the iPhone in China, making them a potential target for Chinese retaliation against the Trump tariffs. That would mean penalties cover nearly all goods from China sold to the United States.

Trump's decision to double-down on his uncompromising stance toward China means little chance of an early resolution of the standoff between the world's two largest economies. For gadget nerds, this seems like a sad and obvious conclusion to the spate of escalating tariffs that the United States and China have been slinging back and forth since Trump got all this started back in autumn.

The administration's "America First" policies have left the United States embroiled in tit-for-tat tariffs with the European Union, Canada and Mexico as well as an escalating trade war with China.

That could help reignite USA demands that Beijing narrow its trade gap, which has temporarily been overshadowed by their clash over complaints China steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology. US indexes are set for a subdued open. China has not yet responded to this latest announced round of tariffs.

Despite several rounds of talks between US and Chinese officials, the two countries have made little progress toward resolving their differences. Economists have forecast that employers added 189,000 jobs in August and that the unemployment rate dipped from an already-low 3.9 percent to 3.8 percent. It brought in about $6.1 billion in revenue past year, according to an estimate from analyst firm Bernstein. An intensified trade war would likely hurt the USA more than China, according to S&P Global Ratings.
