Amnesty urges United Nations investigation, independent autopsy in Khashoggi death

Robert Mahoney Deputy Executive for the Committee to Protect Journalists speaks during a news conference to issue an appeal to the UN on the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the United Nations in New York

He added that Saudi King Salman was "determined to see this investigation through, determined to ascertain the facts, determined to hold those responsible accountable and determined to put in place policies and procedures in the security services to prevent something like this from ever happening again".

Turkish prosecutors have summoned more witnesses to testify as part of the investigation into the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, local television reported Sunday.

The public prosecutor said a total of 18 people, all Saudi nationals, have been detained in connection to the probe.

The announcements in Saudi state media came more than two weeks after Mr Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul for paperwork required to marry his Turkish fiancée, and never came out.

After days of denying to know his whereabouts, Saudi Arabia on Saturday claimed Khashoggi died during a fight inside the consulate.

"First we were told Mr. Khashoggi supposedly left the consulate and there was blanket denial of any Saudi involvement", Graham, R-S.C., tweeted Friday.

In a sign of growing pressure on Saudi Arabia, Turkey said it will announce details of its investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday and United States congressional leaders said the Gulf kingdom in particular its crown prince should face severe consequences for the death of the writer in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

A spokesman said: "We share the widespread worldwide concern following the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, and in light of those concerns SDI will not be proceeding with this particular appointment".

He also said that they did not know the details of killing, and "where the body is".

Saudi Arabia acknowledged on Friday that there had been attempts to cover up the killing, but it has not released any information publicly on what happened to Khashoggi's body. "We feel their pain", Jubeir said in the interview.

The British Foreign Office said it was "considering the Saudi report and our next steps".

While some are calling for USA sanctions against Saudi Arabia, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said on Sunday that it is too early to discuss such measures "until we get further down the investigation and get to the bottom of what occurred".

Australia announced it is withdrawing from an investment summit in Saudi Arabia later this month - joining a growing boycott that includes the US, UK, Dutch and French finance ministers over the Khashoggi killing.
