Facebook security breach allows hackers potential access to Tinder, Spotify & Instagram

Here is a roundup of the scandals dogging the social media giant.

The issue arose when attackers exploited a vulnerability in the social network's code for "View As" - a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.

Reacting to the new data breach, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said: "While I'm glad we found this, fixed the vulnerability, and secured the accounts that may be at risk, the reality is we need to continue developing new tools to prevent this from happening in the first place". Temporarily turning off the "View As" feature "while we conduct a thorough security review".

Facebook has a security setting that shows you where you have logged in on your facebook, whether it be your phone or computer. That includes anyone who has been subject to a "View As" lookup in the past year.

Facebook said it is also still trying to establish the location and identity of the attackers and will reset the access tokens of any other accounts it believes may have been affected.

Facebook said it doesn't know who was behind the attacks or where they are based.

Guy Rosen, Facebook's vice president of product management wrote in a blog post: "Since we've only just started our investigation, we have yet to determine whether these accounts were misused or any information accessed".

Facebook has given no comments on this yet but if the hackers sneaked into the user account chances are that some data must have been stolen.

"The bigger concern (and something we don't know yet) is whether third party applications were impacted", Williams said in a text exchange.

MPs have demanded that Mark Zuckerberg travels to the United Kingdom to face questions about his "terrible disrespect" for the data of citizens, following last week's data breach at Facebook that resulted in 50 million user accounts being exposed to hackers. Then a congressional investigation found that agents from Russian Federation and other countries have been posting fake political ads since at least 2016.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg appeared at a Congressional hearing over Facebook's privacy policies in April.

According to Facebook, more than 120 million users had seen such content. It is not yet known how many Canadian users were affected.

Facebook said the attack exploited the "complex interaction of multiple issues in our code" and stemmed from a change made to the video uploading feature in July 2017. Last time, the data breach was caused by third party app Cambridge Analytica, which Facebook did not consider an actual breach, since the data was dumped through an online app requiring a Facebook login to participate in a quiz. If investigators find Facebook violated Europe's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the company might face fines up to $1.63 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said "the most important point is that we found out from them", meaning Facebook, as opposed to a third party.

"Following the identification of the breach, Facebook were quick to address the vulnerability, take steps to minimize the risk of further user data compromise and inform the relevant authorities", said Hitesh Kargathra, lead security consultant at Falanx Group.
