"Happiness and relief" inside White House with Kavanaugh poised for confirmation

Kavanaugh's nomination sparked fierce protests

US President Donald Trump praised the Senate on Twitter for approving "our GREAT NOMINEE, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, to the United States Supreme Court".

President Trump sent a tweet after the vote, indicating that Kavanaugh will be sworn in later on Saturday.

In the end, there was a two-vote margin.

On Friday the Senate voted along party lines to remove the last obstacle to holding a decisive vote this weekend. He flashed two thumbs up when the final vote was declared and aides on board applauded. Kavanaugh forcefully and tearfully denied the accusations in a fiery opening statement and was openly hostile toward Democrats as they questioned him about the alleged assault and his drinking habits.

The US Senate, controlled the Republican Party, is expected to vote to confirm Mr Kavanaugh's appointment to the Supreme Court.

Among those voting to allow the final confirmation vote to take place were Senator Susan Collins, the Maine Republican considered a swing vote.

He also said Mr Trump had "stooped to new depths" in mocking the testimony of Mr Kavanaugh's accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. As I've said previously, my job is to assess the facts before us and the fact remains that no evidence exists to support the allegations made against Judge Kavanaugh.

Under pressure from wavering Republicans, GOP leaders agreed to an extraordinary Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week that mesmerized the nation as Ford nervously recounted her story and said she was "100 percent" certain that Kavanaugh was her attacker. But Collins said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no corroborating evidence from witnesses whose names Ford had provided. "We must always remember that it is when passions are most inflamed that fairness is most in jeopardy".

A vote on confirmation could happen as early as Saturday. It is an anticlimactic finale to a battle that riveted the nation for almost a month.

"There may be people with power who are looking the other way, but there are millions more who are standing together, speaking up about personal experiences of sexual violence and taking action to support survivors", Ramirez said.

Joe Manchin is facing a hard re-election campaign in West Virginia, a traditionally Republican state that Mr Trump won by a landslide. Joe Manchin, who had been undecided.

"Shame on you!" protesters yelled from the Senate gallery.

Republican senator Chuck Grassley suggested on Friday that one of the reasons there aren't any Republican women on the Senate Judiciary Committee because they couldn't handle the workload. Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona voted yes, as did Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Majority Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Mr Kavanaugh was a "serious scholar, a brilliant student of the law and a meticulous and dedicated public servant". A few Democrats sat stone-faced nearby.

Murkowski announced Friday that she would be pairing her vote with Daines as a professional courtesy and a gesture of goodwill.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a moderate from Alaska, voted against advancing Kavanaugh in Friday morning's procedural vote. She said he was a "fine man" but was not the right person "for the court at this time".

Vice President Mike Pence planned to be available Saturday in case his tie-breaking vote was needed.

With Republicans controlling the chamber by a narrow 51-49, Collins' "yes" vote essentially assured a minimum of 50 votes for Kavanaugh.

The debate sparked smouldering resentment by partisans on both sides, on and off the Senate floor. He accused Democrats of emboldening protesters: "They have encouraged mob rule".

The lone Republican to oppose the nomination was Sen. "Nothing can be further from the truth", she said.

Two other women accused him in the media of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. I did not do this back in high school or at any time'.
