Michael responsible for child's death in Georgia

'One Scary-Looking Storm': Watch Michael Arrive in Video from Space Station

"Winds of this intensity can really knock down any tree or structure in its path".

Residents and officials were taking stock of the damage on Thursday.

"I've never been through one this bad", Nelson said. Thousands of home have been destroyed from Panama City to Mexico Beach along the Panhandle.

Florida governor Rick Scott had warned of "unimaginable devastation" from the approaching menace, and it looked like he was proved right on Thursday morning as the first rescue and fix crews arrived to assess the damage.

Schools and state offices in the area are to remain shut this week.

Michael also disrupted energy operations in the US Gulf of Mexico as it approached land, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 per cent and natural gas output by almost one-third as offshore platforms were evacuated. It weakened steadily as it traveled inland over the Panhandle. Some parts of the Carolinas and southern Virginia, recently deluged by Hurricane Florence, could see up to 6 inches, the hurricane center said.

More than 900,000 homes and businesses are still without power in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas.

While many cities along the Florida Panhandle enjoy the protection of various channel, barrier and tied islands, which can help stifle the impact of storm surge on the mainland, Mexico Beach sits between Crooked Island and the St. Joseph Peninsula, directly on the water.

"The wind that came through here was surreal".

The small beachfront community, located about 40 miles south of Panama City, Fla.

"I'm urging residents of impacted areas to continue to stay off the roads and listen to your local authorities so that our first responders and utility crews can do their jobs", Gov. Rick Scott tweeted Thursday.

The storm, which caused a major disruption for oil and gas production in the gulf, had the potential to drive sea water levels as high as 14 feet (4.3 meters) above normal in some areas, the National Hurricane Center said.

"Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed".

Michael was forecast to move across southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia on Wednesday night. It also was an October icon - the strongest continental United States hurricane to make an October landfall based on maximum sustained winds at 155 miles per hour.

Briefing President Donald Trump at the White House, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) chief Brock Long said Michael was the most intense hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle since 1851. About 3,500 Florida National Guard troops were deployed, along with more than 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel, Governor Scott said.

CNN journalist Brooke Baldwin was left aghast at what little was left of Mexico Beach, Florida, as she viewed from a helicopter the devastation of the Florida Panhandle from Hurricane Michael, the third-most powerful hurricane to hit the us mainland in recorded history.
