Migrant Caravan's Arduous Journey Through Central America Toward U.S

Honduran migrants board trucks sending them back to Honduras after they crossed the border into Guatemala illegally in their bid to reach the U.S. in Agua Caliente Guatemala

After arriving at the tall, yellow metal fence Friday, some clambered atop it and on US -donated military jeeps. Others were carrying young children in their arms.

This is a breaking news update.

Donald Trump has threatened to cut aid to Central America and close his country's border with Mexico if a caravan of Honduran migrants marching toward the USA is not turned back.

Migrants in a mass caravan are chanting that "one way or another, we will pass" as they move toward a bridge on the Guatemala-Mexico border.

David Leopold, chairman of the Immigration Law Group, says despite reports of migrants marching and singing the Honduran national anthem as they make their way to Mexico, the trek out of Central America isn't a "fun ride" but one filled with unimaginable abuse directed at women and children.

"Gentlemen, we have to be ready in case the wave comes to here, OK?"

Various caravans of migrants have been traveling by bus or on foot from their homeland, mostly through Guatemala, in the hope of not just reaching Mexico but heading on to the United States.

Many said they were making the journey for economic reasons.

Jose Porfirio Orellana is a 47-year-old acorn and bean farmer from Yoro province in Honduras.

"There is nothing there", Orellana said.

"The journey has been very tough, very hard but there's no work in Honduras", said 20-year-old Glenda Salvador, a mother of two toddlers and one of the multitude of Hondurans gathering in a Tecun Uman park close to the bridge crossing from Guatemala to Mexico. The last migrants of the caravan are expected to arrive later on Friday, migrants said.

As the sun rose, a military helicopter flew along the Mexican side of the river foreshadowing the difficulties they could face. Late Thursday, some 300 Mexican federal police officers equipped with antiriot gear were deployed to the border crossing ahead of the caravan's expected arrival.

Jonathan Guzman, who joined the mass procession caravan en route, said he dreams of finding a construction job in Los Angeles.

Mexico's foreign ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

Most migrants are carrying few belongings, taking what they can carry in backpacks, as they head out on the almost 2,800 mile (4,500km) trek.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it needs the United Nations body's help to manage all the refugee applications. Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border.

As the mass of humanity strung out from Guatemala City to the border, it was unclear whether those who made it the farthest would wait for their countrymen to arrive before attempting a mass crossing into Mexico.

Mexican officials say the Hondurans won't be allowed to enter as a group, and would either have to show a passport and visa - something few have - or apply individually for refugee status, a process that can mean waiting for up to 90 days for approval.

The developments on Friday came as Mike Pompeo prepared to fly to Mexico to discuss migration with the country's officials.
